Site Manager
I was a part-time Site Manager at the East Recreation Center. Due to Covid-19 the building was only open for official events - in a typical summer, managerial duties would have been running the facility for the public. My co-manager and I were responsible for creating summer safety videos for kids (boating safety, general open water safety, etc.) that would be released to the public. We also created themed educational kits for kids to take home since the Rec Center was not open to the public - after making and sanitizing the kits, we set up a station outside for anyone to come pick up. We were still responsible for the overall safety and facilitation of events at the Rec Center, however the majority of our work this summer was to facilitate education to kids in a safe and fun way without the risk of exposing anyone to Covid-19.
Resident Assistant
I was an RA in for an upper-classmen dorm located off-campus. I was one of four RA's at East Lake and was responsible for a building of around 100 students. My duties included, but were not limited to: planning events, being a resource for students who were in search of campus information, creating a safe space for students who were experiencing mental heath crisis' and offering sources for help, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for all students within the dorm, attending the front desk when assigned, performing a "safety walk" in and around the dorm buildings when "on-call", and much more. I was trained in the areas of student mental health, campus violations (drugs and alcohol), shooter scenarios, domestic violence, fire safety, and much more. A portion of my work as an RA occurred during the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic during which I was put in the position of creating a healthy and safe environment for the remaining students on campus.
Rock-Wall Belay Instructor - Outdoor Education And Recreation Department
Prior to becoming a belay-instructor, I took a course that taught me how to properly teach another person how to climb/belay, how to properly perform a rescue when needed, and how to assess risk. My responsibilities included: teaching individuals how to properly tie an 8-knot to a climber, how to load the belay device, the proper techniques to belay a climber, teaching the dangers of belaying, teaching the unique responsibilities of a belay-er, facilitating safe belay practice, and evaluating whether an individual has passed the belay test.
Rock-Wall Attendant - Outdoor Education And Recreation Department
My responsibilities included: working the front desk, educating new climbers to the dangers of climbing/bouldering in the facilities, ensuring a safe climbing environment, and encouraging challenge to the climbers.
Swim Instructor
As a Swim Instructor, I taught group lessons as well as private lessons. I primarily taught kids between the ages of 4-8 years old. My responsibilities as a Swim Instructor during group lessons were as follows: create a teaching plan, facilitate water/swim education to the children at the beginning of each lesson, create games that furthered the education and practice of techniques, break-down the lessons/techniques in a way that the kids would remember, and facilitate safe learning. During private lessons, I would communicate consistently with the parent or guardian of the child to ensure that the lessons were carried out in the way that the parent or guardian expected. I often worked with kids who were physically disabled and unable to take part in group lessons. I also worked with kids who had fears of water, kids who were far advanced for their age, and kids who just needed a little more time to learn.
Lifeguard - Seasonal
I was a Lifeguard from 2015 - 2017, and then I was given the title of Lead Guard for the 2018 and 2019 seasons. I applied and was giving the title of Pool Manager in 2020, however due to Covid-19 the aquatic center was unable to open.
Swim Instructor Assistant
I was responsible for helping the instructor teach lessons to large groups of kids, and overall help in areas of the lesson whenever the instructor needed help or was feeling overwhelmed.
Lifeguard/Fitness Center Assistant
This was a work-study position on-campus. My job description included both working as a lifeguard and as a fitness center assistant depending on what I was assigned to on a given day. As a lifeguard I ensured the safety of swimmers at the campus pool. As a fitness center assistant I was responsible for checking-in students and ensuring their safety while using the equipment.
