About Anna Marbrook

Anna Marbrook has a career spanning over 25 years as a director in theatre, film, television and community projects.She recently created and directed a ten part television series for Maori Television called Waka Warriors. It follows three rangatahi as they circumnavigate Aotearoa on waka hourua Haunui and vie for a place sailing to the Cook Islands. Anna directed the feature length documentary “Te Mana o te Moana, the Pacific Voyagers” which traces the two year voyage of 7 ocean going waka from Aotearoa to America and back across the Pacific to the Solomon Islands. It is currently premiering across the Pacific and had its first screening on Maori Television. It won the world medal at the New York Film and Television Awards.Anna created and series directed two seasons of “Real Pasifik” for TVNZ – a show that revives, shares and celebrates differentiated Pacific food culture and the power of connecting tourism, food and the economy. In drama Anna has directed over 100 episodes of Shortland Street for South Pacific Pictures. Anna co-founded and ran Theatre at Large with Christian Penny and Heather Lee from 1990-1997.Anna has directed for the Auckland Theatre Company, The Edge, NZ Opera, Taki Rua, The International Festival of the Arts, The Perth Festival, the Adelaide Festival as well as teaching at Universities and Drama schools both in NZ and Australia.Through the 90’s and the 2000’s Anna worked regularly with Playmarket the national playwrights organisation to support the development of new playwrights, workshopping and mentoring new scripts. Anna is the patron of Massive Theatre Company. Anna is engaged in voluntary work in the realm of peace, interfaith dialogue and anti-nuclear lobbying. She has directed numerous peace events in Wellington, Auckland and Rotorua as well as organising conferences and events to support these endeavours.
