My name is Anna Maria Papadopoulos, and I have lived my entire life growing, learning and evolving in my time between two countries, the US and Greece. I was born in New York City yet at a very young age my family moved to Greece. The transition was always hard for me, as every time I went back home to Greece, I felt like I left a part of me in the US. No matter where I was, I prioritized staying connected to my heritage and community, which is what motivated me to attend Anatolia College, the American College of Thessaloniki. Anatolia equipped me with the educational tools I needed to take initiative in my community, become a member of my school's Greek-newspaper and the president of the Greek-Traditional-Dance club. As a resident of New York, when I am back in the city, I often spend my time volunteering at the Greek Orthodox Youth Association in Whitestone Queens teaching Greek-language classes to elementary students. After graduating high school during the pandemic, I distinctly remember feeling the need to give back to my community. I have witnessed my country go through a devastating economic crisis, an immigration crisis and a pandemic that constantly bombarded me with the feeling of helplessness and being powerless in the face of the struggles that my community has been surviving through. Attending American University, interning at the office of Senator Menendez and becoming a part of the American Hellenic Association are all part of my efforts to give back to my community, to further explore this special connection between Greece and the U.S and in the future graduate Law School and follow a career in international diplomacy and foreign policy. On campus I have always sought out opportunities that would allow me to learn more about Greek-Foreign Policy. Last summer I participated in a 6-week academic program in Brussels and Madrid and took classes about the origin and function of the European Union with a focus on Greek socio-economic issues. I was able to visit the European Parliament and interview elected Member Anna-Michelle Asimakopoulou about the Immigration Crisis in Greece and its management by the EU. I was also able to visit the NATO headquarters and interview Chris Giannaris about operations of the organization and its future agenda. I seek to further broaden my horizons on matter of foreign policy and give back to my community

  During my internship with Senator Menendez, I was able to learn through primary sources how Congress Operates and how policy is being conducted. More specifically I was lucky enough to assist John Butchko the Legislative correspondent for Armed forces and national security and Veterans affairs with issues concerning national defense. This position allowed me to assist with legislative research on matters of national defense attend congressional hearings, assist with drafting memos as well as constituent correspondence and administrative work. I was also responsible for giving constituents tours of the capital, manage constituent requests, develop interview transcripts and attend press conferences
