High pressure role in a small planning consultancy dealing with a large volume of mainly housing projects at a range of scales – from single dwelling schemes to strategic scale site allocations promoted through the LDF process. I have a strong and up to date understanding of the policy making process, including in relation to site promotion and allocation. I provide a supporting role to multiple people within the consultancy, which requires excellent timekeeping and organisational skills. My roles include planning policy research; site visits and appraisals; report writing; reviewing consultant’s work; submission of planning applications and appeals; monitoring of applications through the application process; liaising with clients, members of the public and Council officers; mapping using GIS software; production of promotional materials; and assisting with community engagement exercises.

My two-month placement was funded by the Vodafone World of Difference programme. Whist at Plantlife I became adept in data analysis and interpretation including extensive use of Microsoft Excel and MapInfo GIS. During my two-month placement I was in charge of a new project from start to finish. I produced a large spreadsheet of information and over one hundred overlap maps, intended to assist the efficiency of in-house botanists working on the Important Plant Areas project. I also used design skills in Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Publisher, and conducted online research to produce two pages to be included in a Plantlife e-bulletin. I also assisted with website upkeep, and at the end of the placement gave a presentation to the Plantlife conservation team on the work that had been achieved.

At the CET I assisted with events co-ordination, and was responsible for organisation and supervision of events for adults and children. I executed leadership qualities, co-running the Trust’s parent and toddler group, and managing volunteers involved in this. I was able to use my creative flair and research skills when coming up with ideas to suit each session. I gained a great deal of administrative experience, dealing with people (in person, by phone and e-mail), handling transactions, producing accounts and managing bookings. I also gained experience with inter-organisational liaising when planning events. I am also responsible for setting up the Trust’s first ever e-mail news bulletin, and have a good understanding of how to communicate and promote events effectively.
