About Anna Olsen

An experienced public health researcher with extensive national and international networks encompassing academia, non-profit and government. An innovative thinker, with 20 years of history using consumer collaboration and co-design to translate empirical data and theory into practice and policy, I facilitate effective collaborative efforts between researchers, communities and government and am interested in the application of social research methods in research design and ethics, project management, qualitative and mixed methods analysis, publication, teaching and supervision. Key Interests:Anna is interested in the application of social research methods, including mixed methods and co-design, to health, social inequalities and ethics. Her theoretical and methodological training lies across the anthropology of health and illness, qualitative research methods and mixed methods with a particular interest in illness discourse and thematic analysis. She is the recipient of an NHMRC post-doctoral fellowship and has experience in research design and ethics, project management, qualitative and mixed methods analysis, publication, teaching and supervision.     Dr Olsen is a Senior Lecturer in the Social Foundations of Medicine at the ANU Medical School. Her interdisciplinary program of research combines practical and critical approaches to public health, with a particular interest in marginalised populations and qualitative methodologies. Current research includes: pill testing; opioid overdose prevention; methamphetamine use; drug use and motherhood; domestic and family violence; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health; and ethical practice in social research. She values collaborative approaches to research and has extensive experience working with government and community on evaluation and research projects. Dr Olsen teaches and supervises post-graduate students across anthropology, medicine, public health and psychology.

    During her NHMRC post-doctoral fellowship at the Kirby Institute, UNSW, Dr Olsen lead research into women's health, Indigenous health and injection drug use. With over 10 years of involvement in illicit drug use research and policy her research interests include drug use, hepatitis B and C, sexual and reproductive health, social inequalities of health and Indigenous health. Her theoretical background lies in the anthropology of health and illness, qualitative research methods and social science in public health. Her research projects included: healthcare needs of women with hepatitis C; pathways to treatment for Indigenous Australian's with hepatitis B; and Implementing Expanded Naloxone Availability in the ACT (I-ENAACT) program evaluation.
