About Anna Pace
As a member of the Erdos Lab, I am involved in research that investigates how the autonomic nervous system controls the cardiovascular response during stress. The specific brain region we are interested in is the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN), a neuronal group involved in various stress responses. In the past few years, the lab identified brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), well-known modulator of neuroplasticity, as a major regulator of how the PVN controls efferent autonomic activity during stress. I have a particular interest in the role of the BDNF-mTOR signaling cascade. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is a growth signal known to couple environmental cues with energy-demanding cellular processes. My current thesis revolves around understanding whether mTOR promotes growth within the PVN to increase its sensitivity. Through targeting various components of the BDNF and mTOR signaling pathways in the PVN of rats and comparing their cardiovascular stress response and neuronal markers of mTOR activity and neural circuit strength, I hope to offer insight on how the brain regulates blood pressure.
