In this role, I assisted with research & development at a hydroponic greenhouse facility while following food safety guidelines. I developed, tested, and recorded experimental set-ups and standard procedures for consistent, controlled trials, and I prepared presentations for laboratory and company leadership to communicate research findings and make recommendations for production & facility practices.

National Laboratory For Genetic Resource Preservation

While working as a lab aide, I supported the lab mission of protecting and evaluating plant genetic resources to preserve genetic diversity. I germinated decades-old seed samples using a variety of substrates and mediums to test for seed viability and maintained up-to-date documentation of management and germination practices of seed samples using both paper and online database systems

Over the summer, I traveled to Germany to perform a research internship sponsored by the German government. I worked at a university biochemical institute on project to develop novel protein replacement system. I designed, cloned, and evaluated 32 plasmid constructs to test in proposed replacement system, and then measured system efficiency and efficacy by using Western blots and qPCR assays.

My role was to promote sustainability in student residence halls at my university by educating students on waste-sorting and composting, teaching residents how to use alternative transportation, and encouraging involvement in sustainable activities. I campaigned to get 1,000 students to pledge to more environmentally-conscious habits in campus-wide campaign and completed and showcased independent project to peers and campus community dedicated to constructing more sustainable buildings at university. In my second year in this position, I became a peer mentor to help new members of the program and organized a service day to clean up local environmental education center with students.

As a peer mentor, I worked with first-year students to help them adjust to college and prepare them for success. This was done through developing lesson plans related to topics such as academic integrity, diversity and inclusion, and sustainability and facilitating a recitation class once a week. I also communicated information to students about events, resources, and opportunities at university to promote first year involvement and community.

This internship was remote due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I performed literature review on platelet structure and function and intracellular pathways related to platelets. Based on this review, I constructed a map of intracellular pathways that impact platelet function based on review and utilized the findings to suggest pathways for drug intervention to assist battlefield trauma care.
