My project revolved around elucidating the biology of the ROS1 proto-oncogene and characterizing the functional differences among cancer-driving ROS1 fusion kinases. I was responsible for designing the experiments to test hypothesis relating to the project under guidance from my supervisor and for carrying out the majority of bench-work and data analysis. Some of the techniques I used included cell and bacterial culture, live-cell imaging, fluorescence microscopy, high-throughput drug screens, extracellular metabolic flux analysis, mutagenesis and cloning, RT-PCR, western blot, and immunoprecipitation. I also participated in basic lab maintenance and reagent preparation, and instruction of new students in laboratory techniques.

As a PhD candidate in the department of Cell and Molecular Biology I investigated the effects of antiretroviral therapeutic agents, such as those used in HIV/AIDS treatment regimens, on mitochondrial DNA damage and mtDNA repair proteins. In addition to working with my mentor to develop a research plan, carry out experiments, and draft manuscripts related to the thesis, I also assisted lab members with various projects investigating mitochondrial function in HIV/AIDS patients as well as basic lab duties.

For my undergraduate thesis I performed chemical analysis of skin lipid pheromones in garter snakes and helped with snake care to determine impacts of environmental factors on snake reproduction in a herpetology laboratory. I also spent a few months collecting field data on to find a link between fly larva and the spread of choke fungus in grass seed crops.
