My graduate research was focused on studying biofuel production in a marine microalga native to Delaware. For this project I used a variety of analytical methods, such as gas chromatography, elemental analysis, and colorimetric assays, to evaluate the biochemical profile of the alga at varying stages of growth. Additionally, I also evaluated enzyme activity and expression to determine how the nitrogen source was affecting the growth and biochemical profile of the alga. I have presented research related to this project at the International Conference on Algal Biomass, Biofuels, and Bioproducts, the Algal Biomass Summit, and the University of Delaware's graduate student symposium.During my time at the University of Delaware I traveled the Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation in Mesa, AZ twice for training in large scale algae cultivation and biofuels related lab procedures. Research Assistant Duties: -Develop scale-up protocol for Heterosigma akashiwo-Conduct an independent research project based on using Heterosigma as a biofuel feedstock-Set up aseptic experiments, including gas tubing and cylinders-Collect and analyze algal samples-Determine algal growth rates using cell counts, dry weights, and chlorophyll content-Analyze the fatty acid profile of the algae using gas chromatography-Analyze the protein content of the algae using elemental analysis-Analyze the carbohydrate content of the algae using a sulfuric acid extraction followed by an MBTH colorimetric assay-Analyze enzyme activity using colorimetric assays -Quantify nutrient levels in algal cultures and environmental samples using a Seal Autoanalyzer-Analyze data using Excel, JMP, and R -Prepare research for publication-Prepare common use lab solutions -Dispose of all hazardous lab waste -Wash and sterilize all lab equipment-Clean and calibrate lab equipment-Train new lab members on SOPs and safety

As a biology student at Washington College, I received a well-rounded education in the arts and sciences. I graduated with knowledge in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Ecology, Calculus, and Chemistry, to name a few. While at Washington College, I worked as a tutor in the Quantitative Skills Center where I helped students in Calculus I-III, Chemistry, and Biology. I also worked as a teaching assistant in the General Biology labs, where I assisted the students with their lab work. At Washington College I was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest liberal arts honor society, and Beta Beta Beta, the National Biological Honor Society. Upon graduation I received the Department of Biology Research Award.
