Veterinary Information Scientist
CurrentVPIS is the only 24-hour specialised emergency telephone service in Europe dedicated to providing information on the management of poisoning in animals to veterinary professionals worldwide. VPIS also runs Animal PoisonLine (APL), a triage helpline for pet owners.VPIS is a division of Emergency Scientific and Medical Services (ESMS). Other services provided by ESMS include 24-hour telephone services to the pharmaceutical industry. VPIS was officially launched in 1992.Working as member of the team providing a 24-hour service, answering enquiries from veterinary professionals and owners requesting information and advice on possible clinical effects and appropriate management of poisoned animals. This involves:• communicating information to callers accurately, clearly and promptly• making accurate and complete records of all enquiries dealt with at the time of the call,including legible written records and entries on the computer database.• Using specified information resources and referring to senior colleagues or a consultant veterinary surgeon when clinical advice is required.
