Research Visitor
Since December 2016 I have been supporting Rolls-Royce sponsored Ti Fundamentals program. My role is to manage the yearly budget, prepare students NDA contracts, identify the new research area, monitor current research progress, and organise reviews for Universities. In addition, I am responsible for organising Ti Fundamentals lunch talks for Engineers within Rolls-Royce plc. I work closely with broad range of Universities, Institutes and Companies (please see Section Interactions outside Rolls-Royce). I co-supervise PhD students at Imperial College London and Oxford University and help company specialist with their PhD programs. I am also Research Visitor at Oxford University and Imperial College London where I am responsible for the 1-1 Helios Training Sessions for PhD students and I am the author of the training pack APT sample preparation using Focused Ion Beam (FIB). I am a main point of contact for APT work between Rolls-Royce and Universities. I am leading number of project on Ti alloys which increase company understanding of subjects – please see list of publications for more details. All work between Imperial College London and Oxford (APT group) is carefully planned by me what allows keeping cost of the experiments to a minimum. As a main APT point of contact I have been responsible for planning, running and reporting (DNS reports, materials memo, presentations) number of experiments for different materials (mainly Ni alloys and Ti alloys). In addition, I coordinate and run number of experiments for Rolls-Royce PhD students and I attend seminars, conferences, and workshops.Main programs:• New polycrystalline Co-Ni superalloys• Superalloys: Atom Probe Tomography (APT) of gamma prime in a new generation nickel disc alloy. • Various forms of hafnia inclusion in RR1000 • RR1000 Weld Microstructure Characterisation• Ti alloys programs

Phd
PhD thesis: Ordering and deformation mechanisms of alpha titanium alloys. The fatigue behaviour of near-alpha and alpha+beta titanium alloys depends strongly on the microstructure, the environment and the load cycling conditions. It is known that Ti-Al alloys can suffer from a chemical decomposition on ageing above 500degC or air cooling which reduces fatigue life. The factors promoting the ordering, as well as its effect on fatigue crack nucleation and propagation are still not sufficiently understood. This project aims to provide an improved understanding of how ordering affects the extent of planar slip occurring during fatigue in the a phase of aluminium-alloyed titanium alloys. For this purpose, samples of Ti-7Al, Ti-6Al-4V and IMI 834 were aged to promote ordering and the formation of nanometre-scale alpha2 (Ti3Al), at a range of temperatures between 450-700degC for times up to 84 days.Technique used: light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), in situ time-of-flight (TOF) neutron diffraction, atom probe tomography (APT).In summary, it was found that precipitation of the ordered alpha2 phase appears to occur much faster, and in greater proportions, in multi-component Ti alloys than in the binary alloy. Additionally, the appearance of superlattice spots was much clearer, and occurred after shorter ageing times, in Ti-6Al-4V and IMI 834 compared to Ti-7Al, despite all the alloys having a similar Al content in the a phase. This indicates that the addition of the ternary elements to binary Ti-Al system accelerates the formation of the alpha2 phase.
