My father, a man of few words, always talked cars and had wise words to impart. Most, including the 1967 Tempest he gave me , stuck with me! One of my favorite phrases . . . "Lead, follow, or get out of the way!" Another . . . "Use your head for somethin' besides holdin' your ears apart, Stink Pot!" What values did I take away from my Pop? The optimist's strategy! First, we are fearless! We aren't afraid to share ideas and go beyond the realm of reasoning to find the answers. Second, we think beyond the surface to develop a way to reroute, or adapt. We refine, or re-find until the job is DONE! The alternative is unthinkable. Third, we understand. The road gets bumpy. Our decisions and experiences create an indelible impact on the lives of stakeholders. Great project leaders and managers come equipped with 4-wheel DRIVE, big cushioning tires, extensive trauma kits, survival resources, and a winch just in case a friend, or business partner gets stuck. Fourth, remember! Our minds LIVE to structure chaos! I know now that everything we were taught about skills and personality traits is WRONG! The issue? Our perspective! Fifth, remain aware! We make, or break leaders in the process!Impatience is NOT a bad thing. Individuals value their own time and feel they can be most effective in certain ways. Great leaders ask others to TAKE responsibility according to their strengths and then divvy up whatever is left diplomatically.Listen! Stubbornness may mean an individual finds a solution nonviable. Why?When time permits, we take the pulse of the room and give consideration to all ideas. Decide collaboratively the best solution by the result it will bring. Is it cost effective? Is the result measurable? Is the impact positive? Occasionally, head leaders must reaffirm their position and their pay. Offer your support! One day, it may be you! Last quote from Pop . . . "Don't give up the ship, Baby Doll!"My response . . . . "NEVER!"
