Performed research in Dr. Craig Martin’s lab on a species of CAM plant found in South Africa known as “Living Stones.” CAM plants are characterized by their photosynthetic pathway known as Crassulacean acid metabolism. These plants are often found in desolate areas where water stress is common. To minimize water loss, CAM plants assimilate carbon dioxide at night to avoid opening their stomata during the heat of the day. Living Stones thrive in quartz fields in the desert where their photosynthetic machinery lies underground, further minimizing their water loss. To gain insight into such a complex adaptation, carbon uptake was measured through the plant’s buried leaves and compared the photosynthetic rates to plants with unburied leaves.
Undergraduate Reseracher
Performed research on Neotoma middens that were collected across the western US and Mexico. These middens were preserved for over thousands of years and contain small particles of plants, feces, insect remains, and other miscellaneous organic materials. Our lab group assessed the chemical composition of particles inside the packrat middens to understand changes in vegetation between the last glacial period and the present. In order to assess chemical composition, we utilized mass spectrometry to track 13C and 12C stable isotope ratios and correlate these ratios to the age of the midden. 13C and 12C are both stable isotopes of carbon, thus they do not decay over time. As plants assimilate carbon dioxide, the enzyme rubisco preferentially chooses the lighter isotope, 12C, although it still assimilates small amounts of 13C representative or atmospheric availability. The ratio of 13C/12C can thus be directly correlated to the availability of each isotope at the time of assimilation because relative fractionation rates are known. Our lab assessed the composition of 13C and 12C in plant materials and fecal matter within each midden as a direct representation of the terrestrial 13C and 12C abundance at the time the it was assimilated through photosynthesis. With this information, we worked to determine how climate changes during that time affected plant adaptation. This project required analytical skills to assess chemical composition and to determine how isotope ratios can reflect climate change specifically due to anthropogenic effects.
Dietary Aide
Managed a dozen other dietaries part time during dinner hours to assure all elderly residents were properly aided. Responsibilities included assigning dietaries to various sections of the dining room, delegating cleaning tasks before close, assuring that teamwork of all dietaries was maximized, helping to resolve disagreements, and aiding any dietaries with an excess of requested tasks by residents. Assisted approximately 20 elderly residents each evening during dinner hours by aiding residents to their tables and serving them dinner.
