Climate change is the defining issue of our time (UN, 2022) and it disproportionately affects the most vulnerable. Synergies exist between climate change and poverty alleviation with the potential for multiple benefits in terms of improving welfare and reducing inequalities. As such, solutions to fuel poverty are linked to strategies for pursuing decarbonisation to reach net zero. In order to ensure a just energy transition it must therefore be recognised that the voices of vulnerable individuals and communities are paramount if we are to design a new energy system that works for everyone. Crucially, a whole systems approach which includes collaboration between key stakeholders, and in particular between academia and research, the private sector and policymakers is necessary to develop multi-faceted, innovative solutions to meet the energy needs of all consumer groups.Anna's role at Energy Systems Catapult is to drive forward this mission by utilising her extensive experience in stakeholder management and communications within the private sector/public sector/Government and third sector. Her recent return to University to complete a Masters in social policy led to a specific interest in fuel poverty where her dissertation conceptualised the private sector as a space for social innovation, to address fuel poverty beyond the current policy obligations of energy companies thereby putting them at the forefront of driving social change.

Welfare systems and other public institutions face considerable challenges presented by economic crisis such as an ageing population, increasingly flexible forms of work, migration, and shifting ways of family life. Alongside these fiscal and demographic pressures, rising socio-economic inequality and austerity has begun to reverse a number of key social advancements in terms of health and social mobility. The MA Social Policy will address a range of social problems, such as poverty, homelessness, crime and health inequalities. Of key importance is consideration of the underlying causes in order to formulate policy solutions to address specific social problems. It also examines contemporary and comparative developments within social policy to encourage consideration of the shifting nature of welfare arrangements in a broader political, economic and social context, from both a UK and global perspective.Inherent to Social Policy as a field of study is a normative focus that seeks to describe the state of a specific society not only in terms of the fulfilment of human needs, but to consider if our societies should be more effectively and justly organised. A key focus for the MA Social Policy programme will be on the ways in which we might transform our societies to increase human well-being and to promote sustainable forms of living, thus seeking to evaluate alternative forms of social organisation.Key assignments of a standard for publication:- An evaluation of the effectiveness of school-based interventions to reduce suicide ideation and suicide attempts among adolescents.- A comparative analysis of policy responses to child poverty in the United Kingdom and SwedenThesis:- To what extent can social innovation bridge the gap between social policy and the private energy sector as a means to tackle energy poverty? Voluntary Community CampaignerFounder Of 'Supporters Of The New Secondary School Campaign' Jan 2020 - Sep 2021Cheltenham, England, United KingdomAnna became increasingly frustrated seeing the lack of a holistic and strategic approach to engaging stakeholders in the planning of the much anticipated new secondary school, not least because the key customers in the whole process (prospective parents and children) were not being consulted or communicated with at all. As a result she set about contacting all key stakeholders to begin a campaign (Headteacher of the Trust, MP, councillors, county council, parish council and community). As part of this Anna set up the 'supporters group' on facebook where she regularly updated and informed the community on progress for 18 months - total members 1100. The campaign included attending monthly parish council meetings (where Anna faced aggressive opposition from a local pressure group), regular meetings with the Trust and county councillors. With the support of a sub-group of parents Anna organised a protest and media campaign and spoke in a radio interview to defend the campaign's position. The Liberal Democrats organised a petition to the Baroness Berridge (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the School System) which Anna supported and promoted - the Baroness gave her full support. Anna spoke at the meeting to approve the school on behalf of the community and continued to defend the campaign's position in the face of a judicial review which was eventually dropped as a direct result of the campaign. The school was approved and opened in September 2021.
