📖 I assisted with "Blood Taxes" Project, looking at the present day economic and political impacts of French colonial military conscription in West Africa during the interwar period.📖 I examined French military archival sources to locate data pertaining to levels, types, and locations of conscription in West Africa; and sorted this data in Excel. Given variation in records across years and colonies, I used French language skills and historical knowledge to identify data in colonial reports.📖 I examined the archives to learn about the nature of the data they provided, and reported this learning to my supervisors. My feedback was critical to understanding the data offered by the colonial reports, defining the limits of the study, and providing contextual information for future analysis.

📕 I assisted with a project looking at the financing of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, which used ship-level data to analyse investor behaviour in the Trade and created a transnational investor-based dataset of the slave trade.📕 I examined ship-level data catalogued by Jean Mettas to locate variables such as numbers of enslaved people, ports, proprietors, and investors; and used Excel to sort this data. I used French language skills to translate and locate important information from notes in ship records, contributing to contextual knowledge.📕 Secondly, I assisted with book research, locating material relating to women and forced labour in colonial French West Africa. My work was in contribution to a book under contract authored by Dr. Marlous van Waijenburg.📕 I identified relevant material within Denise Savineau's 1938 report on Women and the Family in French West Africa, written in French. I used French language skills to read this report and take note of critical information relating to the subject matter. I summarised my findings with detailed notes and provided weekly reports to my supervisor, Dr. van Waijenburg.

✨ I worked as an assistant grant writer with the development team at the Global Livingston Institute (GLI) – a community development organisation focused on health, economic development, and the environment in Uganda and Rwanda.✨ I identified and wrote grant applications for a range of projects led by GLI, including those focused on mental health among refugees, theatre and gender-based violence, and recycling in local communities. I conducted background research and prepared literature reviews for members of the development team leading a range of projects.

🌍 I worked on the Violations Against Indigenous Africa project, led by Dr. Kelly Askew, which documents historical and contemporary cases of human rights violations against indigenous peoples of Africa.🌍 I identified cases of indigenous pastoralist rights violations and conflicts across Africa, establishing leads through contacts on the continent. I got in touch with known contacts in the sector, and developed a database of relevant grassroots organisations and activists on the continent. I made contact with these actors, delegated potential leads to junior research assistants, and tracked responses and developments in cases they reported to us.🌍 I expanded access to the project by creating a webform in English and in French that could be used to report cases of human rights violations relevant to the project. Additionally, I established new social media accounts where I regularly interacted with related organisations and activists.I collected information from contacts with the sensitivity necessary to document human rights violations. I used information from contacts, news sources, and academic sources to write articles on the cases and mapped them on the project's website using ArcGis mapping.

I accompanied staff on visits to clients at rural homes and markets in order to monitor the health of their microcredits, check on their business activity, communicate about client concerns, and attempt to collect repayment.🤝 I researched the effectiveness of the MFI and the sustainability of income generated through the use of microfinance services. I looked at key data and financial figures of the MFI, and analysed these to find key rates. I examined relationships between relevant factors and financial outcomes.I helped to expand the online presence of MECSAPP and SAPPATE, by initiating website construction and training employees to continue development. I established profiles on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google Business; and located the organisations on Google Maps.

🪴 I was an intern for EcoWorks Detroit – a non-profit focused on just, equitable, and inclusive solutions to climate change and other community sustainability challenges. I helped to represent the organisation as a member of the Michigan division of the national Energy Efficiency for All (EEFA/MEEFA) Coalition, which facilitates access to energy efficiency in affordable housing. I worked on EcoWorks' contributions to the coalition.🪴 I coordinated group interviews and storytelling events with residents of affordable multifamily housing to be used for energy advocacy work. I drafted and adapted interview questions. I liaised with local organisations and the coalition, and represented EcoWorks at conferences related to energy and advocacy work.🪴 I assisted with energy efficiency workshops put on by EcoWorks, which taught energy saving methods and about low income assistance and appliance replacement programmes offered by utility companies. Participants were taught how to enrol in such programmes. I assisted with home visits in local communities to assess and improve energy efficiency, and facilitate access to programmes offered by utility companies
