Croatia

• Role of eco-volunteer working alongside researchers from the Blue World Institute (BWI), contributing to ongoing research for the Adriatic Dolphin Project. • Conducted systematic boat surveys across pre-decided ares of the Adriatic ocean. Fieldwork involved collecting data on dolphin group composition including individual age and group size aswell as information on dolphin behaviour such as time spent diving, travelling and playing. • Became familiar using a GPS in the field, collecting accurate positioning data and relating this back to behavioural data. • Discussed important issues relating to the future conservation of the bottlenose dolphin, specifically rules and regulations in relation to its protection. • Part of the data collected included information regarding the presence of fishing, trawlers and recreational vessels and their potential impact on dolphin behaviour and group composition. • Provided technical assistance in the photographic identification of individual dolphins following training of the importance and scientific use of the unique shape and scarring of the dorsal fin.

• Volunteered alongside the organisation Wildlife Ecological Investments (WEI) within Dinokeng Game reserve, South Africa (SA). • Took part in regular game transects from vehicles within the reserve measuring species richness, group composition, abundance and behaviour. • Improved existing knowledge of African game and wildlife; becoming proficient using binoculars and utilising training in distinguishing sexes of various species. • Familiar with the use of a GPS and compass. • Conducted bird point counts in the early hours, working in teams on foot to estimate species richness and abundance using both visual and acoustic methods. • Coordinated habitat assessments in groups within the reserve as a method to estimate grazing and browsing pressure on vegetation, notably the impact of African Elephants. Involved species identification and taking various measurements to evaluate damage. • Experience of living in the field, independent cleaning, cooking and general day-to-day camp chores. • Completed the Open Water PADI scuba diving qualification at Sodwana Bay. • Assisted researchers in a beach-clean up, recognising the importance of education.

South Africa

• Assisted conservationist and manager of the Applied Ecology Unit (ACT) Paul Cryer, within the Ithala Game Reserve located within the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. • Taking a holistic method of conservation, I assisted in the geographical mapping and planning of building a wooden lodge which would aim to integrate local communities within the Ithala game reserve and reduce conflict and scepticism relating to the African ecosystem. • Contributed to innovative approaches in looking for a sustainable and inclusive solution to the ultimate goal of expanding the Greater Ithala Complex to alleviate rhino and elephant overpopulation. • Committed to long hours travelling to work destinations in remote parts of the game reserve. • Gained invaluable experience of working and living in the field, taking part in night-watch, learning how to filter water and build fire as well as ration food and water. • Valued the importance of health and safety in the field including learning to respect the African ecosystem and wild game.
