This was a fantastic opportunity full of challenges. UNOPS operates like the private sector on a fully self funding scheme. They needed someone to mend relationships with vendors, partner agencies and internal stakeholders as well as grow the business on UN Web Buy, their e-Commerce platform. I made an impact in multiple areas. KEY ACHIEVEMENTS◆ Led the updating of an outdated, lagging e-commerce platform used by government and non-government agencies to purchase automobiles; my team and I updated the site and infrastructure establishing new catalogs increasing sales to $72 million and profits 36% more than target. ◆ Automated and eventually digitized the UN’s Annual Statistical Report from an excel spreadsheet tracking data for 33 different agencies representing $16.2 billion in procurement spend. In my first month, I assessed the functions I was responsible for and created a strategy to streamline support to operations. One recommendation that was implemented immediately was to combine two headquarters procurement offices (Budapest and Geneva) This decision was fraught with challenges, but led to greater consistency of practice, speed to delivery and better utilization of limited resources. In Pakistan, we lived in tents and delivered essential supplies under tight security and environmental uncertainty. In Denmark, I conducted the Global Supply Review and developed a new Emergencies Supply Strategy, which included working with suppliers and inhouse on revised agreements and stocking strategies to increase speed to operations. While in Uganda, I led the Supply function for the whole country program.
