In this role, I participated as a National Science Foundation-funded undergraduate researcher to investigate the aeromicrobiome through the Biology Integration Institutes: Regional OneHealth Aerobiome Discovery Network (BROADN) program. I learned and applied several microbiological sampling, preparation, and analytical techniques to gain a better understanding of the aeromicrobiome. I collected plant, soil, and air samples at the Central Plains Experimental Range (CPER) site. I processed and extracted DNA from several sources, including plant, soil, and air samples. Further, I cultured a selection of plant and air samples collected at this site to better characterize the bacteria interacting in this location.Also, I utilized computational tools to run bioinformatics on a set of data. I ran statistical analysis on the output from my bioinformatics dataset to determine which factor had the greatest impact on microbial diversity between two plant communities: plant species or morning or evening time of collection. This dataset was temporal, so I created graphs to show the change in microbial diversity over time.Finally, I prepared samples from bacterial cultures from proteomics to do analysis on the proteins expressed by microbial species grown in dark vs light conditions to investigate their response to UV light.At the end of the program, I presented a poster detailing my work throughout the summer at a poster presentation session.
