Dr. Anna Vanderbruggen is a mineral processing engineer who obtained her degree from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Géologie (ENSG) in France. She completed EMerald Erasmus Mundus Master from EIT Raw Materials program, specializing in georesources engineering. Initially working with primary resources, she shifted her focus in 2018 to secondary materials, concentrating on lithium-ion battery recycling. This led to the creation of her own research project, primarily aimed at anode graphite recycling. Driven by her passion and commitment to this field, she pursued a Ph.D. at the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg and Aalto University, where she successfully defended her dissertation with distinctions in 2022. Her innovative method on graphite recycling from used lithium-ion batteries earned her the European Innovation award in the category EIT Change in 2022. Currently, Dr. Vanderbruggen is associate Professor at the GeoRessources laboratory at the University of Lorraine in France. She continues her work in battery recycling and teaches mineral processing and recycling at the university. For more information about my research and publications, please visit my profile on ResearchGate: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Anna_Vanderbruggen

The research aimed to achieve three main goals:First, a method for characterizing the black mass using Automated Materials Characterization was developed. This well-established technique for primary resources was adapted for secondary materials to analyze the chemical composition, morphology, associations, and degree of liberation of LIB components such as Al foil, Cu foil, casing, lithium metal oxides, and graphite. Insights into the behavior of particles during the recycling process and the effectiveness of these processes were gained.Second, the efficiency of the recycling process was improved by using froth flotation to separate graphite particles from lithium metal oxides. This approach allows for the recovery of both valuable materials, which is a significant improvement over current recycling methods. Finally, in collaboration with the Helmholtz Institute Ulm, the reuse of recycled graphite in new batteries was investigated, with the potential to close the loop for spheroidized graphite. The supervisors for this research were Dr. Martin Rudolph from HIF and Prof. Rodrigo Serna-Guerrero from Aalto University.
