It was a really interesting course teaching us about the genetic and molecular changes that occur in diseases and cancer; and novel therapies such as stem cells and alternative chemotherapies available that are safer than traditional treatments.I also carried out a postgraduate project which involved working with rat fibroblast cells to determine if cells containing EVI1 (ecotropic virus integration site) lead to abnormal transcriptional regulation resulting in acute myeloid leukemia. This was investigated by comparing gene expression between normal cells and those with EVI1 and identifying if EVI1 decreased carbonic anhydrase III (CAIII) expression, as this has been found in previous studies to be the main change seen. This was a fascinating project both theoretically and practically as it was a chance for me to learn new lab techniques such as sub-culturing and transfection. Show less
