I was trained as a bar associate, initially, which includes serving drinks, running food and drinks on the floor and many tasks involved in the opening and closing of a large pub. I was promoted in August 2018 to the position of team leader, taking on responsibilities such as leading a team of up to 30 staff, changing barrels, depositing cash and witnessing interviews. This business environment was foreign to me when I started, however, it is the one I found easiest to adapt to. The pace of work in this job is much more challenging than any other I have experienced so far, it is an environment in which you must be able to time keep and prioritize tasks efficiently in order ensure the bar is running at a constant level and customers are satisfied. During almost every shift I either open or close the pub, this involves delegation of tasks and will only work if the team works together. I have gained the most valuable teamwork and leadership experience from this job thus far and feel largely confident working with a team which can be up to 50 people on a busy Saturday night. Working in retail was an area I was yet to be familiar with, and one I gained the most customer driven experience so far. Waitrose is a leading chain of British supermarkets, therefore I benefited from a first-hand look into the various operations and departments involved in such a large business. During my time here, I worked in 4 separate departments, all of which were closely associated with the customer, therefore, I learnt the art of communication and how important it is when working in a role which is almost completely customer facing. For almost 3 years I worked as a Barista, Waitress, and a member of the front of house team at Swallow Bakery cafe and restaurant. During this time, over the 3 years, I watched this small business grow and eventually thrive. Since this was a small, independent business I was able to grow very close to the management, this meant I could make suggestions relating to business ventures and ideas in order to expand the customer base and promote the restaurant. For example, each year during the Cheltenham Literature Festival we would welcome a huge amount of business causing lengthily queues, therefore we implemented a multiple queuing system at peak times in addition to a take away coffee stand positioned outside the building. Both of these strategies reduced waiting times by a significant amount and were suggestions made by myself in the run up to the festival. Show less
