Africa Access Water (AfAW) is a non-profit organization that provides and delivers solar powered water systems in Africa. AfAW affirms that water is at the center of socio-economic development and advocates that water is a key resource for production, food security, and poverty eradication. The water programs implemented by AfAW create clean drinking water, improve agricultural irrigation systems, better hygiene + sanitation, and support community wealth creation. Imagine wanting to learn but lacking the opportunity to do so? For many, going to school is a given. For others, attaining an education feels like a dream. Children are out of school around the world for different reasons; more often than not those reasons are beyond their control. No matter the reason, children are too often robbed of their right to an education.The more Anna Butler saw this happening, the more she sought to understand why and what to do about it. Over the course of her career Anna has continued to learn from out-of-school-youth around the globe. In her TEDx talk titled, “Included Not Ignored”, she shares some of her unique experiences and offers insight into why children are struggling to learn. She advocates that if we are to truly have a conversation about how to address some of the world’s most pressing issues, then out-of-school voices must be a part of the discussion. They deserve a seat at the table, and we should be listening to them - because we will be learning from them. From this talk, Anna hopes to see more institutional partnerships that create inclusive educational opportunities, perhaps via academic scholarships. She would like for discussions of diversity and inclusion to involve the kids that so few talk about.Despite countless obstacles, children still want to learn. An educated society benefits our collective community and so people who wish to continue learning should be supported. Anna feels strongly that children everywhere deserve the opportunity to learn, regardless of circumstance. Her work has focused on creating educational opportunities for youth up against the most unjust of challenges. Our world’s youth matter, they quite literally are the future, and so their voices should absolutely be heard. This TEDx serves as a call for more innovative educational pathways and reminds us that out-of-school youth should be included, not ignored.

CorpsAfrica is a non-profit organization that recruits and places African graduates in remote, high-poverty communities. Prior to a year long site placement, CorpsAfrica volunteers complete four weeks of experiential training in order to be adequately equipped and empowered to succeed. Volunteers earn trust and gain better understanding through living in the communities which they serve. Lighthouse Relief (LHR) provides immediate humanitarian relief for migrants landing on the Greek island of Lesvos, as well as longer-term programming for young people and children in Ritsona refugee camp on mainland Greece. The closure of borders in March 2016 left tens of thousands of people stranded in camps across mainland Greece, often in unsafe and inhumane conditions. In light of this, LHR adapted quickly to meet the new and emerging needs of vulnerable populations trapped in periods of long-term limbo, with a focus on women, children and youth.• Served as the child protection lead for Lighthouse Relief (LHR) in Ritsona Refugee Camp• Managed a diverse team of 20+ international staff, volunteers, interns, & camp residents• Created inclusive, informal learning environments for children 3-15yrs. in emergency context• Safeguarded at-risk children and documented protection related concerns in the space• Identified critical risks including abuse, neglect, trauma, violence, & sexual exploitation• Recorded internal incident reports, made external case referrals, & liaised with UN partners• Provided weekly report updates on data collected & key achievements observed in the space• Maintained internal monitoring & evaluation (M&E) database & updated its tracking system• Attended sub-working group meetings in Ritsona & Athens as LHR protection point person• Maintained awareness of both national and international policies/practices• Trained teams in child protection & emergency response on Greek mainland & Lesvos island• Generated mass inventory & SWOT analysis as part of the organization’s Half Year Analysis• Facilitated daily debriefs & organized weekly check-ins with team members• Managed program development and planning through the monitoring & delivery of results• Worked in a high pressure, sensitive, and ever changing environment

This program introduced students to social change theories and social organizations in Lusaka, Zambia. Particular attention was given to issues of addiction and recovery, HIV and inadequate employment opportunities and their impact on community development. Students developed and applied skills, practices and techniques for program development and implementation. This experiential program focused on program evaluation techniques, ethics in international volunteerism/foreign nonprofit interventions, globalization and its influence on the nonprofit sector. The Borderless Higher Education for Refugees (BHER) Project increases access to educational programs for refugees. By providing gender equitable teacher training programs to working and untrained teachers, BHER contributes to community development and improves overall access to economic, employment, and decision making opportunities. The BHER training program was uniquely developed to deliver onsite and on-line courses which meet international standards and are offered via joint efforts with partner organizations.
