I helped adult refugee, asylum seeking, and immigrant students to acclimate to life in the U.S. through a life skills English curriculum in the Chicagoland area. During an earlier stint at WR, I assisted other instructors in creating a standards-based curriculum that meets ICCB's requirements for adult English education. I also helped connect my students to other services offered to them through or organization or partner organizations. Students appreciated participating in my research in how to teach humor and pragmatics in a second language.

I loved learning language when I lived in Bosnia, so I joined ICCT to help other Americans learn language as adults while living as expatriates in other countries. I developed a learning module for an intercultural intelligence course, coached learners in their phonetics and second language acquisition courses, used Moodle to update the class websites, and at one point took care of invoices for student tuition.

I started as field staff in 2011, and moved into the managerial and coordinator roles in 2014. As I grew in cultural awareness, it became important to me that our organization have someone help other staff on our team and in the region to learn not only how to speak the local language, but bend to the culture around them. I created the role of Language and Culture Coordinator and synthesized and adapted materials from other regions to do so. Based on second language acquisition research, I created job descriptions for language learners, tutors, teachers, and helpers, so that students would be resourced with the help they needed. As a team manager, I co-led our team by casting vision, mediating conflict, mobilizing staff and students to accomplish our goals and projects, and changed what performance evaluation looked like for our team. I managed projects (EQ Seminars) by delegating, planning, envisioning, and conducting regular meeting updates. I also gave talks in the local language. Because we were a non-profit, I also had to raise money for my own salary over the 6-year period. This involved networking, fundraising, conducting both larger and more intimate events and benefits, and vision-casting for potential donors.
