Peer Catalyst

I worked as a mediator between students and their professor in a Freshman Year Seminar course. The class focussed on discussion on readings and ideas which was mainly done in small group work. I facilitated this discussion by occasionally assert my own opinion into the conversation or by asking a thought-provoking question to get a better response from the class. Outside of class I made myself available to students via email and Facebook for any questions or concerns about assignments or the class in general. I also met with the professor weekly to discuss what went well and what we could improve on in order to improve the classroom environment.I led a few class activities independent of the professor. One such activity was what I called the "Society Game". It was an idea that I got from my Peer Catalyst Mentor, but I put my own spin on it in order to get a specific outcome. In the game, I had the class get into groups and establish their own societies from the ground up. After establishing the society, I gave them social, political and economic conflicts to resolve with the consequence of disestablishment of the society if their solution was incompetent. The purpose of this game was to encourage new college students to think about issues from a different perspective, They were to put aside personal experiences in favor of doing what was best for the society. Respect for other opinions and ideas was then related to their experience as a new member of the Quinnipiac community.
