Thesis title: Process development for the robust production of polyhydroxyalkanoates.Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are biopolymers with high industrial value as biodegradable plastics. During the PhD I developed a novel production process for the synthesis of PHA polymers with controlled composition and structure showing minor differences in material properties, which resulted in the publication of three scientific articles.During my PhD:- I established a new research line to exploit the natural advantages of an extremophile microorganism for the biotechnological production of PHA.- I developed a novel bioprocess for tailoring PHA composition, structure and properties and demonstrated its robustness at different fermentation scales.- I published 3 first-author papers as a result of the result-oriented work.- I developed new HPLC, GC and fermentation protocols and I gained expertise in polymer characterisation techniques such as NMR, SEC, XRD, tensile test and thermal characterisation.- I was responsible for lab organisation, ensuring the supply of lab miscellaneous and managing the booking of shared equipment.- I showed leadership aptitudes during the supervision of several master projects, helping the students to accomplish the project scope, teaching them good laboratory practices and training them in fermentation and analytical techniques.- I demonstrated as a teaching assistant for Chemical Engineering Design 1 and Process Engineering Fundamentals, aiding a cohort of 200+ students during problem sessions.

I analysed pilot plant data simulating different modes of operation and identified improvement opportunities. With a short period of time I had to gain in-depth knowledge of the WWTP operation.

I created deviation written reports for clients and regulatory agencies (FDA, EMA) using TrackWise software. The work was done under tight time frames and demanding deadlines. As part of the reports, I performed root cause analysis (RCA), 5 why, Ishikawa diagrams and created and implemented corrective and preventive action (CAPA) plans.I acted as a link between Manufacturing, QA, Technology Transfer and Engineering department. The job required excellent knowledge of manufacturing operations and associated SOP and good understanding of QA comliance regulations. Good communication and negotiation skills were essential since I worked with people from different departments to gather information to be able to generate clear and understandable reports for people not familiar with the process.

As part of the task, I analysed the current SOP, created control plans, performed risk analysis (FMEA) and helped redesigning the new and improved SOP. I also delivered the implementation of the new SOP and trained the Manufacturing team.

I worked in a multiproduct GMP facility on the manufacturing of active ingredients from mammalian cell cultures as part of the upstream processing (USP) team, covering the stages from ampoule recovery to fermentation and first purification of the product.Inoculum duties consisted in ampoule recovery and the creation of a fermentation inoculum stock. In the fermentation area I worked as part of a team of 6-8 people, operating single-use and stainless-steel bioreactors ranging from 2 L to 2000 L scale. Routine jobs consisted in cell culture monitoring, CIP, SIP and media preparations. All the work was performed aseptically following GMP practices. I was responsible of managing inoculum area on a daily basis and I provided on-the-job training to new starters in the fermentation area. I used Lean 6 Sigma tools for the continuous improvement of the area. Teamwork and good time management were essential for the success of each project.

As part of my bachelor dissertation, I joined the analytical laboratory supporting the group specialised in monogastric nutrition from the Nutrition, Heath and Animal Welfare Department from the Insititute of Agreifood Reseach and Technology (IRTA). I worked in a project studying the incorporation of DDGS, a waste products from the bioethanol industry, into broiler diets performing analysis such as phosphorous content, ash content, oil extraction or calorie content of different type of samples in a GLP environment.
