Good writers know they've become too accustomed to their own work to be able to look at it objectively, and are therefore prone to overlook the elements an editor catches. Whether it's word choice, sentence structure, or grammatical correctness, editors are trained to arrange an author's work clearly, cohesively, and colorfully.• Editors provide consistency. Whether you're writing a book, a blog, or a business document, your thoughts and ideas deserve a polished appearance. Appearance sets the tone of the product, so if what a writer presents to his or her audience is choppy, disorganized, or incomplete, the writer will appear that way as well. Consistency allows for reliability and familiarity, and will in turn provide an increase in audience numbers. • Editors maintain their authors' voices. An editor can not only help a writer discover his or her own voice, but will work in a way that maintains the authenticity of that voice. No two writers are the same; no two voices are the same. My goal as an editor is to always maintain my clients' voices so their products sound like them, and not like me.
