Ucla David Geffen School Of Medicine

For my position as an undergraduate researcher in Yang Lab within the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, I gather data, write, and edit manuscripts on a variety of neurosurgery-related topics such as surgical approaches to dealing with traumatic brain injury, radiotherapy in the treatment of vestibular schwannoma, and VEGF gene inhibition along with the use of immunotherapy in combating glioblastoma. As part of my work under Dr. Issac Yang, I present at journal clubs for neurosurgeons, medical students, and PhD candidates, perform literature reviews, and use in-depth coding analysis to synthesize raw genetic data. This position requires extensive collaboration, scientific paper composition, high reading comprehension of neurosurgical literature, and good public speaking skills.

For my role as the President of the UCLA Backpacking Club, I lead a staff of 20 to manage one of the largest outdoors organizations in the world, with 5000+ members, regular meetings, events, and environmental initiatives, and a highly active online forum. Additionally, I have organized and lead over 10 multi-day backpacking, camping, and hiking trips all over California for groups of up to 30 students. In the past, I have coordinated trips to locations such as King's Canyon National Park, Death Valley, Mammoth Lakes, and various other backpacking trails in Southern California. I am a EMT (June 2024) and have been certified in CPR (April 2024), and have been trained in White Water Raft Guiding, Wilderness First Aid, and outdoor leadership. I also acted as a teacher's assistant for an outdoor education course at New Trier High School. As staff of the UCLA Backpacking Club, I regularly utilize extensive teamwork skills, clear and prompt communication with other staff and trip participants, and leadership during uncertain circumstances. This position also requires strong adaptability due to the nature of changing weather, varied levels of experience of trip-goers, and unexpected occurrences during outdoor expeditions.

JPA is a Chicago non-profit organization that sends therapists and mental health specialists to work with high-risk children in order to help overcome trauma and optimize learning potential. JPA also organizes supply drives and workshops to benefit students, teachers, and families.Following my work establishing and running a Junior Board for JPA, I am now an active member of the Associates Board.

Over my three years as Secretary on the Executive Committee of JPA Junior Board, I helped raise over $50,000 through fundraisers and meetings with donors. I established this Junior Board in 2018 along with three other Executive Board Members, and we grew the Junior Board to 34 members in 2021. We also visited low-funded public schools in inner-city Chicago to spend time with the children. I am now part of a network of college-age former Junior Board members across the country that support the current Junior Board.

As a UCLA Clinical Health Science volunteer for EMRA, I supervise emergency trauma response treatment, evaluate patient charts, and coordinate with medical staff to perform clinical research in Emergency Medicine. I conduct this research on site at the Emergency Department of Ronald Reagan Medical Center, a Level I trauma center, and I access Personal Health Information (PHI) and other patient data to enroll participants in clinical trials geared towards improving ED medical care. This role also involves direct interaction and collaboration with patients, doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. This position requires clear and prompt communication, abstract data analysis, knowledge of Excel, level-headedness in the face of extreme medical emergencies, and rapid decision making in the hospital setting.

As host of Guildhall Restaurant, an up-scale fine dining restaurant in Glencoe, Illinois, I coordinated customers and servers during heavy rush times in order to direct the flow of the restaurant. I also handled scheduling, calls, and reservations, and dealt with difficult situations to resolve issues in a timely and caring manner. This position required good problem solving skills, rapid decision-making, good customer service, and clear communication with the rest of the team.
