Department Of Epidemiology And Environmental Health

As a member of the University of Kentucky College of Public Health faculty, I teach courses in public health preparedness and environmental health communication while also conducting environmental health literacy, dissemination, information-seeking, participatory, public health preparedness, and stakeholder-driven communication research within the Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health.

As co-director of the Systems for Action National Program Office, I organize research designed to understand, evaluate, and compare population health outcomes and impacts related to strategies implemented across diverse settings and related systems. Specifically, I design and conduct studies in the areas of information and knowledge management, dissemination and implementation science, and stakeholder engagement in support of evidence-based decision making while also providing methodological and strategic communication support for investigators addressing a wide range of systems-related questions.

With the merger of the National Coordinating Center for Public Health Services and Systems Research and the Public Health Practice-Based Research Networks National Coordinating Center, I became deputy director of this consolidated Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded national program office. In addition to continuing the managerial and research coordination duties I performed as deputy director of the Public Health PBRNs, I also lead the merged Center's Stakeholder Engagement and Translation Core, working with communication, scientific, and administrative staff to ensure that research findings emerging from grant-funded activities support decision making at policy, practice, and community levels. To support these efforts, I design and implement research projects intended to elucidate the most effective and efficient means of disseminating and implementing research-derived findings to optimize their utility for potential end-users and other stakeholders.

As a research faculty member, I conduct dissemination, information-seeking, participatory engagement, and stakeholder-driven communication research within the Department of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health while also serving as deputy director of the National Coordinating Center for Public Health Services and Systems Research.

Department Of Health Management And Policy

As a research faculty member, I conduct dissemination, information-seeking, participatory engagement, and stakeholder-driven communication research within the Department of Health Management and Policy while also serving as deputy director of the Public Health Practice-Based Research Networks National Coordinating Center.

I conduct interviews and compose press release copy for the Radiological Society of North America Annual Meeting, among the largest health-related conferences in the world. In this capacity, I provide media support during the annual meeting, including fielding inquiries from international media outlets and acting as liaison between researchers and the media, leading directly to coverage of high-profile research outcomes by such outlets as CNN, NBC, USA Today, and Voice of America. I also assist RSNA media management staff with pressroom operations.

University Of Kentucky College Of Public Health

I manage personnel, workflow, internal communication, and research dissemination efforts for this national program office that links multiple stakeholders in pursuit of practice-based public health services and systems research. My duties include providing more than two dozen PBRNs nationwide with technical support related to funding opportunities, grantsmanship, research translation, and stakeholder engagement. I also develop, support, and evaluate research dissemination strategies intended to promote evidence-based public health policies and practice, as well as helping design and implement both internal and external communication evaluation processes. In addition, I assist with the organization, development, and implementation of cross-cutting and multinetwork research studies designed to evaluate and compare public health strategies implemented across diverse settings.

In this position, I coordinated stakeholder engagement and public relations activities for the Kentucky Water Resources Research Institute (KWRRI), the University of Kentucky Superfund Research Program (UK-SRP), and the Kentucky Research Consortium for Energy and the Environment (KRCEE). My duties included generating press releases and other print materials, as well as designing and managing five distinct websites. In addition to these activities, I coordinated federally-funded KWRRI, UK-SRP, and KRCEE social science research projects, playing a key role in designing and implementing protocols; managing field logistics; grantwriting; coordinating both internal research team and external stakeholder communication; fulfilling all Institutional Review Board research requirements; data gathering and data analysis; and preparing scientific manuscripts for publication, as well as posters and presentations for national conferences and symposia. While at KWRRI, I also served as communication lead for the UK-SRP Research Translation Core, a grant-funded role in which I continue to serve. Among my continuing UK-SRP duties are producing publications, presentations, and events designed to communicate health-related research outcomes effectively to such disparate target audiences as at-risk citizens, state policymakers, and federal agency personnel. Through a cooperative agreement, during the first three years of my tenure with KWRRI I simultaneously served as communications and information specialist for University of Kentucky Tracy Farmer Center for the Environment, with duties including event coordination and service on local and regional civic sustainability committees.

During my time at the historic Carnahan Conference Center, I developed and implemented a marketing campaign that led to 33% increase in bookings within a nine-month period. I also supervised a staff of four, coordinating all aspects of facility management, including event bookings, safety and security, physical repairs and improvements, and client services. I provided fiscal management of the conference center, with responsibility for all aspects of accounting, including budgets, purchasing, and billings.

I coordinated corporate events and assisted the business development director with creation and distribution of marketing literature, multimedia presentations, and proposal development for this multimillion dollar facilities management corporation.

In this position, my efforts supported growth of annual fundraising campaign from $817,000 to $1,000,000 during three-year tenure. Among my duties was coordinating high-profile fundraising events, as well as local, regional, and state arts showcases. I also was responsible for developing all public relations copy, including press releases, newsletters, and annual reports, as well as writing and editing promotional articles for the Lexington Herald-Leader newspaper. In addition, I wrote and produced annual fundraising videos and public service announcements, and I served on numerous local and state arts and civic committees.

In this position, I wrote, produced, and scheduled news reports and radio advertisements for broadcast, as well as serving as an on-air programming host. I also assisted with advertising proposal development for both the radio and television enterprises of Oneida Broadcasters Inc.

In addition to writing articles and serving as editorial assistant for Centrepiece, the college's alumni magazine, I composed press releases and coordinated the distribution of public relations materials to media.

I served as a regular on-air programming host for this small-market radio station, as well as writing, producing, and scheduling news reports and radio advertisements for broadcast.
