I worked as an accounting intern at BAE Systems producing explosives at the Holston Army Ammunition Plant. Personally, I didn't come into contact with many explosives, but I did get the opportunity to work with an exceptional accounting staff that let me learn from them while contributing to the company. I analyzed invoice databases to better use the information to regulate employee actions, ensure compliance with GAAP accounting policies, and safeguard integrity as a government contractor. I also processed and paid invoices for various products and services to serve two operating facilities. I assessed the performance of BAE Systems against comparable companies using financial analysis. This experience was very educational, and I was sad to see my internship come to a close.

I worked as an intern in the Accounting Policy and Research group at Tennessee Valley Authority. I assisted the group with technical accounting research and analyzing financial statements to preserve document quality. I also helped with the development of accounting policy guidelines for TVA’s wide range of activities. It was a great opportunity to interact with accounting professionals to create an overwhelmingly educational experience.

As a Supplemental Instruction Leader, I worked to engage students in group study sessions and exam reviews for Accounting 200 materials. I also created study plans for students to aid in their understanding of basic accounting rules, simple transactions, and financial statements. I consulted students one on one for help with active learning techniques and comprehension skills. Overall, this job was a positive experience that grew my love for accounting.

For two summers in a row, I had the opportunity to work as an intern in the youth department at Indian Springs Baptist Church. This entailed organizing local outreach events and week-long mission trips to New Orleans, Nashville, and Nicaragua by meeting deadlines and partnering with other organizations. I also coordinated activities for 40 to 100 students while developing schedules, training, and presentations for staff. This job developed leadership skills beyond what I thought capable and was a great experience.

In high school, I had a unique opportunity to work for the highly regarded Eastman Chemical Company. I regulated computer databases, processed the flow of information, and managed new data to assist employee information needs. I also prepared special project presentations for supervisors though collaboration with coworkers and the interpretation of department obligations. This job taught me much about respecting a workplace and taking responsibility for the quality of your work.
