WildSafeBC is the provincial leader in reducing human-wildlife conflict through education and community solutions. Born out of the Bear Aware program, WildSafeBC has a focus on reducing conflict with wildlife ranging from bears, coyotes, and cougars to rats, skunks, and bats.My key roles and responsibilities included:- Data analysis on black bear conflict in North Vancouver using data downloaded from the WildSafeBC Wildlife Alert Reporting Program. - Technical report writing on black bear conflict in North Vancouver.- Proposed a conflict management plan to reduce conflict long-term across the District.- Worked with a variety of stakeholders from different groups involved with black bears to achieve common goals. - Chaired a black bear working group to work towards Bear Smart goals.

Southern Resident Killer Whales have been in decline over the past several decades. In response to this decline, The Government of Canada put forth the Whales Initiative in an effort to protect Southern Resident Killer Whales and other at-risk cetaceans across Canada. As a Resource Conservation Management Technican, my primary goal was to work with the Marine Ecologist to complete fieldwork assessing Southern Resident Killer Whale year-round presence in the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve and assess food source availability. Due to complications from Covid-19, fieldwork was paused to work on other priority projects from home. As such, my key roles and responsibilities included: - Completing a meta-analysis of all literature published on marine ecology and biology in the Salish Sea- Attending Ocean Literacy working group meetings and planning Ocean Literacy communications in collaboration with National Office- Working with the Marine Ecologist to develop a shark monitoring program using Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) systems

The decline of the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whale population is linked to 3 primary threats: acoustic and physical disturbance from boats, reduced prey availability (chinook salmon), and water contaminants. As a result, new management measures for 2020 were put in place by the Government of Canada. The primary goal for the Southern Resident Killer Whale Outreach Team for the summer of 2020 was to increase awareness of the new management measures and to encourage boaters and the public to take an active role in the recovery of Southern Resident Killer Whale populations. My key roles and responsibilities in this role included: - Developing and delivering online interpretive webinars to educate the public on science monitoring projects and new management measures protecting southern resident killer whales- Forging new partner relationships with regional parks, harbour authorities, and non-profit groups- Coordinating two new social media campaigns promoting southern resident killer whale protection- Streamlining strategies for science and monitoring communication - Maintaining detailed meeting minutes during large interdepartmental weekly meetings

The Learn-to Camp program at Parks Canada aims to remove the barriers that prevent Canadians from getting outdoors, camping, and experiencing national parks. Through low-cost overnight programs and free workshops in British Columbia's lower mainland, new opportunities can be created for urbanized Canadians uninitiated to camping.My key roles and responsibilities for this position included:- Developing and presenting workshops focused at beginner audiences (animal safety, leave no trace, children's programs, tent set-up, trip planning)- Leading guided interpretive hikes for a beginner snowshoeing program- Leading sections of training for incoming Learn-to Camp staff- Conducting pop-up outreach at different venues around the lower mainland, often reaching over 200 contacts in one day- Consistent contact with the general public, answering questions about Parks Canada, the camping reservation system, and general concerns- Producing graphic designs for upcoming event posters and handouts- Creating social media posts for Twitter and Facebook relevant to the Learn-to Camp program

The Tree Ring Lab at UBC encompasses a variety of different research projects that combine the study of forest ecology with dendrochronology to investigate histories of forests and how they have been influenced by both natural and anthropogenic disturbances. My position was on the Alberta Foothills team, where our primary research interest was to discover when and how fires have influenced the landscapes of the southern Rockies of Alberta. Our work revolved around using dendrochronology to find out in which years forests regenerated after stand-replacing fires, in addition to using fire scar samples to reconstruct a more detailed history of when fires occurred in a forest. The information collected from the field will be considered in future Alberta forest management practices. Key roles and responsibilities in this position included:- Operating a chainsaw to take partial cross-sections from fire-scarred trees - Using a compass, map, and GPS to navigate to random plot points in a study area- Using an increment borer to drill into a variety of different tree species and retrieve a core- Setting up sampling plots-Driving to sites in a large field truck and navigating bumpy dirt roads-Taking plot measurements such as slope and aspect of the site-Hiking into plots while carrying heavy gear in large backpacks-Contacting lease-holders who operate in our study areas to inquire about permission to access land-Cleaning and maintaining gear such as chainsaws and increment borers-Identifying Alberta tree and plant species -Using CooRecorder computer software to measure the distances between tree rings-Using mathematical equations (Duncan method) to estimate tree age-Cleaning and organizing lab equipment-Reading reports and creating literature reviews
