I currently fulfil a Lead Business analyst role in the Master Data Management team, with my main focus being on Data Governance. As a Business Analyst in the Client Information Management Unit, my main functions were to specify business requirements for any enhancements required to shape the system we were working on into the 'single point of truth'. This meant bringing other systems on board, i.e. data take-ons and working on more strategic projects as the consolidated system became a central source for certain data sets. In order to protect the integrity of the consolidated system, I had to study and understand the data attributes, business rules and business processes for each of the areas that provided data to the consolidated view. I also needed to understand the interfaces between the various systems, in order to properly assess impacts of any change requirements. I was involved in the integration testing and user acceptance testing phases of our projects. Our area was also the custodian of the data, which meant that we regularly had to measure the quality of inbound and static data, analyse results in order to determine the cause and root-causes of data degradation and recommend preventative and corrective measures. These initiatives were not restricted to the consolidated system, but spanned across the various data providers and data consumers.

My responsibilities in the Information Quality Management unit entailed providing support to project teams on the implementation of practical information quality management. This meant understanding the methodology that needed to be followed to achieve Data Management, ensuring that our processes and procedures remained up to date and relevant to deliver the desired business benefit. In addition to providing consultation on the projects, I also worked on the projects directly to define business and data rules, analysed measurement results, identified causes, root-causes and impacts, implemented data correction initiatives and conducted testing of preventative measures to ensure data quality issues were prevented.

During this period I worked in the Data Quality Centre where I was involved in defining business rules which were used to measure the quality of data sets. I investigated non-conforming data to identify causes, impacts and root-causes, as well as assisted the business areas in identifying corrective qnd preventative actions to improve the quality of their data. My focus during this period was on Annuity product data.

I started my career with Old Mutual straight out of school in the Annuities department where my main functions were data capturing, processing of claims, customer data updates and attending to queries (written and telephonic). I started in a junior position and developed into a more senior role, involving quality checking and authorizing, documenting processes and training new staff. I also started doing testing on system implementations to ensure that they met business requirements and did not introduce new issues.
