About Anna Parikka, Phd

I don't exactly fit into a box. I have a master's degree in business and later I went back to university, started physics from the beginning and got my PhD in astrophysics. What I have learned about myself is, that I love doing research and learning new things. But I also have a practical side and I like a nice balance between these things. In academia I missed the fast paced atmosphere from working for a company. I currently work at Office of Space Commerce as a TraCSS Engineer, mainly coordinating the various technical studies in our effort to build the best TraCSS system we can.When I first moved to the US, I worked on a NASA project, SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) as a mission operations specialist, mainly operating the science instruments, but also the telescope. In my previous job as a postdoc, I already worked partly on the project, but in a German instrument team.In the past I have worked in accounting, doing basically everything related to my clients' financial reporting and often also daily tasks. In scientific research I have learned a lot about programming (mostly using python or IDL) and I feel that usually the programming is not the difficult part of science. I also have learned much about presenting your work and do not dislike presentations anymore. This is where I feel I have developed most in the last years.I also have a fascination with languages which is always useful in an international environment. It helps with my travel addiction, when I can get by in lot of places even with few words of the local language. I love reading in different languages and having lived in 4 other countries besides my own, head for languages has been very useful. I also like to be creative on my free time and I do a lot of crafts and I play piano, sing, and dance.
