We are in the make or break decade - the chance to move beyond environmental emergencies and social injustices. To get to a viable future, those of us living in industrialised, urbanised economies will have to completely reimagine our relationship with nature, unlearn many of our assumptions about the world and find new ways to live. I want to play my part in getting there. Building on a career to date in corporate strategy, sustainability and cross-sector partnerships, I am focused on how businesses need to change to contribute in a meaningful way. Collaboration over competition. Regeneration over extraction. Value for many not few. Wellbeing as the most important measure of success.I'm also actively exploring how I need to change. How I spend and consume, how I bring up my children, how I use my vote and my voice, and how I let go of my 'old world' beliefs and practices and learn new ones that are fit for the future. I am currently Head of Sustainability for The Crown Estate, asking how we can deliver the best possible social and environmental impact as stewards of land and coastline, and developers of buildings and infrastructure. I started my career as a strategy consultant, and then spent ten years in senior sustainability roles for multinationals, with a focus on food and agriculture, before joining the UK government. Immediately prior to joining The Crown Estate, I led the Government Inclusive Economy Unit, an innovation unit in the UK Government that developed partnerships between government and private sector to unlock social value. Before that, as Global Sustainable Development Director of SABMiller, I led implementation of the Prosper sustainable development ambition, which made addressing material sustainability issues part of core business. I was founding Head of the Cadbury Cocoa Partnership and cocoa sustainability lead for Cadbury and then Kraft Foods (now Mondelez). In this role I established a community-centred approach to tackling the root causes of an unsustainable cocoa sector.

Sustainability AdviserIndependent Nov 2016 - Sep 2018My projects for corporate clients are typically focused on embedding sustainability into commercial strategy in a way that supports business development, innovation and growth, as well as delivering the cost and reputation benefits that are more typically associated with sustainability initiatives. Enhancing employee engagement is another key area for focus. My recent projects have been in food and beverage, agribusiness and construction sectors. I also work with industry bodies, NGOs and funders, particularly on strategies that call for corporate engagement and public-private partnership, on issues including agriculture development, food and nutrition security, water security and women's empowerment.I am currently working on a piece of independent research into the role of individuals in driving system change in agriculture, largely based on peer interviews. The aim of this is threefold: to consolidate my own learnings; to foster dialogue within a network of peers on how to be successful changemakers; and to generate useful insights, particularly for multi-stakeholder partnership initiatives and their funders, on how to harness the power of individual leadership.
