TFA corps members attend a five-week training institute as part of their pre-service development. Between 2005-2007 and prior to its charter turnaround, John B. Stetson Middle School was labeled a "persistently dangerous" school by the district and was plagued by a history of low test scores. It is located in the north Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, which is predominantly Latino and was, at the time, notorious for being both crime- and poverty-ridden: 57% of the neighborhood lived below the poverty line, and the school itself was adjacent to one of the top 5 drug corners of Philadelphia. As a Teach For America corps member at Stetson Middle School, I▪ Planned and delivered lessons to 250+ 7th and 8th grade students, including students who were overage, English Language Learners, and/or had special needs▪ Supervised an after-school homework club for struggling students ▪ Co-taught an extended-day classroom of thirty fifth-grade students twice a week

The Chicago International Children's Film Festival was the first competitive festival of films for children in the U.S. and the first children's festival in the world to be recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as an Academy qualifying festival. It seeks to empower children by involving them directly in the jurying process.
