Ann Cassano has a decade of experience working with refugee-assisting organisations and newcomers, both on policy and grassroots level. She has extensive knowledge of social innovations on refugee reception and inclusion. Nothing about them without them: It matters that policy decisions on and projects for refugees include their voices. To ensure that newcomers have a say, can express their needs, evaluate the results, Ann uses methods of designthinking and Deep Democracy in all phases of a project.

HIRDA is a non-profit organization founded at The Hague in 1998 by members of the Somali Diaspora in the Netherlands. ECRE is a member organisation of European refugee organisations. The project aimed to improve the exchange of knowledge and best practices between organisations. - Developing a project proposal regarding Communities of Practice (CoPs): the project aimed to build a virtual environment to facilitate CoPs with specialists on various fields (policy, academics, ngo's, diaspora organisations etc) - Planning and design of ECRE’s intranet and drafting communications plan- Training staff- Communication with knowledge specialists- Inclusion of project in existing knowledge sharing track.

Tasks:- Develop communications strategy to current members and outreach strategy- Introduce ECRE, its work and accomplishments to stakeholders- Develop communications material (leaflets, posters etc) with external designers- Writing and editing articles for website and the Quarterly Newsletter - Writing and editing speeches- Provide input for social media strategy- Initiate common activities, eg European Umbrella March on World Refugee Day: an international campaign in 10 European countries in cooperation with 70 organisations- Manage membership intern- Organise and coordinate annual events and conferences

In 2006 the organisation Fiëbre (now Murga) decided to take some action. Antwerp, the second most diverse city in the world, was suffering from a lack of intercultural dialogue and from growing frustration and negativity (majority votes for the ultra right party, racist crimes, etc.). Fiëbre used the concept of street murgas in Argentina to shift focus from the countries of origin of the Antwerp citizens towards the environment or area they live in. People living in the same neighbourhood can start a murga that can voice the identity of that neighbourhood.Murga vzw* wants to enhance social cohesion and cultural participation through a low threshold project with room for artistic development. Murga vzw uses a neutral and accessible form of street art; a murga is a contemporary collective of people who work with four basic disciplines: music, dance, word and costume.With several people we started a murga in the Cultural Centre of Berchem: Fata Murgana.
