I am a current board member of this Not For Profit Trust that is responsible for overseeing the allocation of government funding for cochlear implants, North of Taupo.A cochlear implant gives recipients far greater personal independence and the ability to make a greater contribution to their families, work places and the community. I had a cochlear implant in 1996 and it changed my life. Deafness negatively impacts on all areas of a person's life - socially, emotionally and business/career. It can lead to depression and isolation.In recent years the government has made more public funding available to allow more deaf people to benefit from cochlear implant technology so they can lead fuller, more satisfying lives. The extra funding was made available after Pindrop Foundation presented compelling data analysis showing the huge ROI as a result of additional taxes paid by deaf people being able to continue to work, and the reduction in benefits and social services that would otherwise be paid out.
