Forest Futures Program Coordinator
As Forest Futures Program Coordinator, I have developed a pilot wildfire resilience grant program using $2M grant from CAL FIRE. Management of this program has included convening a steering committee of regional forestry professionals to inform the program's development. I instituted and oversee quarterly reporting on the public funding grant. I manage contracts and reporting for sub-grantees of the program.Forest Futures is an innovative approach to addressing the wildfire threat to our region by filling critical funding gaps. I review grant applications and award funding for forest health and wildfire prevention projects/programs in the Tahoe-Truckee Region; support management of portfolio of 23 non-profit and public agency grantees; support partners in addressing challenges with their projects; and compile impact metrics for fundraising efforts. Assumed Program Director’s responsibilities during her maternity leave from Dec 2022-May 2023 launching first round of grant application for pilot program.
Intern
TRWC partners with landowners to implement watershed and forest health restoration projects from start to finish. As an intern, I gathered and compiled data to develop first annual State of Donner Lake Report. This report will be used to track the environmental and social impacts to Donner Lake over time and inform the work of the Donner Lake Interagency Partnership for Stewardship. In this role, I additionally supported the development of the Middle Truckee River Watershed Forest Health Partnership - a partnership that collaboratively developed a 10-year vegetation management plan to reduce wildfire risk on federal land in the Middle Truckee River Watershed. I additionally managed all incoming donations using CRM database and developed content for social media, newsletters and other outreach materials.
Education Programs Associate (Americorps Member)
As Education Programs Associate, developed, adapted, and delivered environmental education curricula for 1,200 students through COVID-19 school closures and distance learning; collaborated to develop microplastics exhibit. Spearheaded conversion of gardening workshops to virtual format; managed logistics, presenter coordination, and phenology data tracking increasing participation by 210% and number of workshops from 3 to 7 over two years.
Research Assistant
This role involved work on two majors projects. The first project, my senior capstone, began as an inquiry for a client on water use in the San Francisco Bay Area investigating how conserved water was being reallocated during the 2012-2016 severe drought. In April, following the capstone term from January to March, I continued the research to further investigate drought management practices and how these practices along with anticipated climate impacts will be reflected in ecological, urban, and agricultural water supplies. Through this project I mapped urban water use using ArcGIS, analyzed reservoir storage and river flow levels using R, provided our client with status updates throughout our research, conducted literary review, created and presented a poster on our findings, wrote a technical report on our initial findings for our client, refined methods and conducted further research, prepared new findings in academic paper, submitted paper for review to the Journal of Hydrology (October 2019). The paper is currently being revised for resubmission. The second project involved an analysis of air pollution exposure based on traffic data on Santa Clara County schools proximate to major roadways. This analysis was conducted using ArcGIS by compiling HPMS traffic counts to determine the locations of major roadways within SCC and the location of schools within 500ft of those roadways. These traffic counts were input into and EPA C-LINE model to assess the air quality impacts on schools. These schools were also compared against CalEnviroScreen asthma data and percent of students eligible for the Free and Reduced Price Meal Program to account for a potential disparate impact on lower-income communities. The academic paper presenting the findings from this project are in preparation for submission.
Environmental Justice And The Common Good Conference Coordinator
I operated as a resource to the faculty collaborators and the Conference Manager to plan and execute the inaugural conference. This unique conference is focused on building a stronger collaborative effort between universities and grassroots community partners in addressing environmental justice issues. I worked with conference attendees to map the locations of their projects so other attendees and non-attendees could contact them for potential collaborations.
Outdoor Leader
I am an outdoor trip leader for Wilderness Inquiry's Canoemobile program which engages youth in outdoor-based learning experiences that improve school performance, cultivate a stewardship ethic, and create pathways to educational and career opportunities in the outdoors. Our Canoemobile program travels to several cities to bring these outdoor-based learning experiences to K-12 school kids all over the country. In addition to guiding trips, I am managing the social media and outreach campaigns during our tour to build partnerships, reach community members in the towns we are programming in, and expand Canoemobile's reach in the future.
