"Don't take on too much at once. Quality shines through the quantity." - Anne M. LeeI was never interested in the development of technology or learning how computers worked, even though I was extremely guilty of being glued to the screen, just playing games and watching cartoons. That all changed when I went to Pensacola Christian College and decided on the major of Computer Science. I always enjoyed nerdy activities like learning foreign languages, reading, playing board games, and putting together 1000-piece puzzles as a child; but the beginning reasons I chose Computer Science was because I wanted to look smart, make video games like Nintendo, and make a LOT of money. The coursework for CS was not particularly difficult, but my struggle with doubts and finding any true purpose in this career was. Multiple times I almost caved and switched my major to something easier and less stressful. I bounced back and forth between working jobs on the college campus instead of just staying in the IT office when given the chance. I felt extremely lost, especially when I struggled in Physics I and eventually failed Physics II. I wanted to drop out of college entirely, but something changed my mind. Not the fact that others would see me as a failure, but the sudden surging feeling inside that I could do better than this. That I could actually succeed in this major if I just got back up and tried. Now I realize it's not about being perceived as smart, making video games, or being rich. It's about how fun and challenging this career can be, and how satisfying it is to come up with solutions to such intricate problems with the access to multiple coding languages at my fingertips!I don't need to be seen as smart -- what other people think of me doesn't matter, I know who I am.I don't need a degree to make video games -- there are free game engines and YouTube tutorials.I don't need the greed for money -- adopting frugal habits, becoming minimalist, and living below my means has taught me to stop obsessing over material things and coveting what other people have.I am now content because I found what matters most in Computer Science -- my time. What I whole-heartedly crave now is knowledge, developing skills, and continuous learning. That is where I feel my time is best spent.
