About Anne Hastry Sleeman

With experience in Marine Animal Rehab., Rescue and Research coupled with a nerdy love of data, data science and all things technology, my data collection software company, WatchSpotter is the cumulation of my life’s work. From the hallways of the Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center at the UNE my affinity for caring for marine animals was fostered and grew. Tasked with the center’s life support systems further opened my eyes to water quality, fecal coliforms, and bio-loads. I was the primary research tech in a multiphase study: Protecting the Saco River: Tracking non-point fecal pollution to its species source. Upon leaving UNE, I traveled to the Southern Great Barrier Reef AUS to work on an international research team focusing on cetacean population dynamics. Once back I sharpened my Software UX skills working as a software consultant. My first years at FAU HBOI I split between the Harmful Algal Bloom lab and the Dolphin Population and Assessment Lab. Settling in as a Research Assistant for the latter as well as a first responder for the Marine Mammal Rescue Team. In working with the Dolphin Population and Assessment Primary Researcher, along with other industry collaborators, I soon became the PIs data analyst and was paramount in the creation and development of the programs state of the art cloud-based SQL database platform. At the end of 2019 I branched out on my own. In 2022, WatchSpotter was born. My idea was to create a customizable SaaS application that could be used by researchers worldwide. Data is data- scientific questions need to be answered. My contingency was that no matter what the research topic- if the research brings people into the field-whether scientists, volunteers, or citizens, they are there to gather data-to answer questions. I knew two big challenges facing scientific research groups are time and money. It's not feasible for most nonprofits/environmental institutions to afford custom software- nor do they have the time to wait for such programs to be complete. These challenges fueled the customization and simple UX that are WatchSpotter. I love being part of something that makes other people’s jobs and lives better and has the potential to lead to real scientific breakthroughs that could lead to better conservation and/or policy change. My interests range from Marine Mammal population trends, coastal and estuarian species, imperiled species conservation, HABs, science-based policy change, and communications with commercial fisheries. I love travel, turtles, sporting clays, SCUBA, Boston sports and German Shorthaired Pointers.

With a passion for environmental science and conservation, and a nerdy love of database and computer technology, WatchSpotter was born out of frustration from using a poorly designed citizen science app. With decades spanning scientific research and database development, we knew that we were uniquely positioned to develop a science focused data driven application. As science research dollars are being stretched thinner than ever, we knew our solution needed to be affordable, customizable, and scalable – a perfect fit for any scientist, regardless of project focus, or funding. Our experience with startups furthered our understanding of the importance of offering a user friendly, cost-effective app that scientists can implement in a short amount of time with minimal training required. WatchSpotter is an affordable, cloud based, customizable solution that is easy to use, provides data points that are necessary to advance project specific scientific research objectives and is scalable should the project objectives expand, or project funding sources increase. We happily collaborate with scientists, researchers, stakeholder, and educational organizations. There isn’t another product on the market like WatchSpotter. Our aim is to make citizen science accessible to all, and to help create local science projects that have global impacts. Our biggest challenge is marketing costs. We realize that our sales cycle is long. The funding from grants would bridge the gap between our starting point (now) and when the first revenues come in-estimated 6-9months from now. We personally funded all the upfront design, development, and testing costs, and have a product that is ready to go. Marketing to environmental groups and universities often means waiting on their funding to become secure, hence our projection and estimated wait time.WatchSpotter is a software company that developed a proprietary cloud-based web and mobile solution for citizen science and environmental research.

  • Salt Institute For Documentary Studies
    Admissions And Office Manager
Salt Institute For Documentary Studies May 2009 - Feb 2011
Upon graduation, most Salt students say such things as “my experience at Salt was life changing”. So true was my time at Salt. It may seem dramatic to say that I became more human while there, but, I can think of no other adjective to sum up my experience so perfectly. I learned that every person has a story. We are all different, yet, we are so much the same. I became awakened to situations, people and things that prior to Salt I would have judged, dismissed or poked fun of. I learned to love a person for who they are not for what I or society deems them to be. I learned how to look at a photograph, listen to a radio spot and read a non-fiction written piece from a different point of view. The people at Salt made me a better person. I am more open minded, accepting and better off because of those who taught me while I was working there. While there, some of the things I did:Performed all tasks related to student admission to program.Screened incoming applicants and made decisions on accepting, declining and wait-listing. Analyzed student’s potential ability for documentary writing, photography, radio and multimedia. Responsible for distribution of all financial aid payouts. Collaborated with local businesses and restaurants to offer perks to students.

University Of New England Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center Jan 2006 - Jul 2008
What a time I had at UNE! WOW! Rehabbing Marine Animals was a surreal experience and one that I will always regard as one of my favorites. I learned SO MUCH. Beyond needing to learn the tasks required for the job, I learned a lot about humankind and myself. I found out that if I set my mind to do something, then I will. Working with students “on the spectrum” made me realize that we all view the world and its contents from different points of view. The bonds you build with those you work with in rehab are stronger than most any other field. Compassion, conservation and an understanding of how important our roles as humans are in the protection of our planet. I left to participate in a dolphin population research project on the Southern Great Barrier Reef Australia. While there I:Was responsible for all in‐house water quality testing for flow thru and closed system pools.Trained staff, work‐study and volunteers on pertinent daily water quality tests. Compiled, created and updated standard operating procedures for all water quality tests and protocols. Skippered boat and was lead researcher in six‐month study to test, gather and analyze data and assess the health of the Saco River, Maine. Trained volunteers on procedures/techniques for beach response, animal husbandry, medical procedures, animal restraint, and other tasks. Performed all aspects of husbandry and medical care for marine mammals and sea turtles. Performed medical procedures as directed by Veterinarian.
  • Avnet
    Sales Manager
    Avnet 1992 - 1998
    Phoenix, Az, Us
Avnet was invaluable. I learned to follow my gut, take chances and that not everyone always has your best interest at heart. I learned life lessons, and that I have an aptitude for computer software.I started in the electronic component inbound sales division. There was no stress, no quotas, no overtime, and… no commission. The managers there were fantastic. I wanted more. I changed divisions to Avnet Computer. I had my own territory, sales quotas, cold calling and client retention. The sales floor was competitive, people were making money, lots of money. Pressure to exceed quotas was high, hours were long, but it was fun. The division was expanding. I saw an opportunity for growth. Peers, managers and the like discouraged me from pursuing a management position. I heard the decision had already been made as to whom was to be hired. I put together a plan and despite being a huge underdog, I landed the position. My time as sales manager taught me to go after what I want. Take risks. Go with my gut. That a person’s resume does not necessary speak to their ability to do a job well. It also taught me that with competition, people’s true colors shine. I became aware that not all people have the same code of ethics that I had been taught. I learned more from the person to person relationships than anything else. I was laid off after several years. I laughed (and cried) in the days that followed as countless sales reps called me with questions regarding the system software, the sales cycle and the like. I had dubbed myself an Avnet lifer at the time. I came to realize that creativity and entrepreneurship were skills I possessed, and once explored, my true self would shine forward. Learning and embracing that when one door closes another door opens. I am grateful for all of the people I met, worked with, hired, trained, was trained by, learned from and laughed with. I have both friendships and lessons that I will cherish for my lifetime.
