Children are born naturally optimistic and curious about the world, and I am passionate about nurturing this curiosity and optimism throughout their K-16 experience. I believe that this is a community effort; involving the home, the school, and non-formal providers. My doctoral work explores how students develop "action competence", or the capacity and initiative to participate in the creation of a sustainable society. For students to develop action competence, they must be engaged in learning. I'm interested in finding/developing programs that engage students with relevant curriculum, real-life context, and meaningful projects that address local issues.

I also serve on the state advisory for Project WET and Project Learning Tree, and am a member of the California Environmental Education Interagency Network (CEEIN). In addition to my work in environmental education, I also monitor and support 8 CA Mathematics and Science Partnership projects throughout the state.
