The Institutions and Ecosystems Section improves the performance of business support organizations around the world, thus growing the multiplier effect of their work with exporters and investors. I lead a team of technical experts and project managers delivering impact across the globe. The knowledge, skills and methodologies we offer are being applied in developed, transition, developing and less-developed countries in every continent.

I returned to New Zealand and worked alongside the GM International to support a change programme designed to improve our customer experience. By working in partnership with skilled and highly engaged NZTE people, operating via agile and customer centric processes, NZ businesses will get the solutions that they need to help them internationalise. This meant leading the implementation of the change programme for half of the organisation, driving an improved customer experience across 36 locations and 250 people globally.Responsibilities included:• developing and delivering a communications plan• identifying skills gaps• designing skills modules• designing new measurement and reporting processes• leadership development • business advisory to General Manager International• acting as General Manager International as required • representing NZTE at major speaking events as required.Highlights: • improved employee engagement results for the International team raised our corporate-wide results to be the public sector leader• audit review of the change process confirms on track and effective implementation

Hamburg Area, Germany

Senior Diplomatic role working alongside Ambassadors to deliver the work of NZTE aligned with New Zealand government priorities through our offices in Hamburg, Paris, London, Milan, Madrid, Dubai, Istanbul and Moscow. Responsibilities included:• Leading a team of 30 Trade Commissioners, Consuls General and Business Development Managers in UK, Europe, Turkey and Russia.• Contributing to strategy as a member of the International Leadership group• Ensuring successful delivery of services and solutions to NZ businesses and clusters to help them grow and internationalise• Creating and maintaining productive and powerful relationships with external and internal stakeholders, including an Advisory Board.• Managing an operational budget of NZD $10 MillionHighlights:• Celebrating $50 million worth of business deals for NZ companies secured with our help• Leading a successful restructure to ensure we have the right people in the right places

Specialising in apparel and textiles.Responsibilities included:• Engaging with 120 NZ business in the apparel, textiles and giftware sector to build export capability and access new markets• Representing the NZ government sponsorship of NZ Fashion Week• Managing delegations and trade fair stands of NZ fashion companies to Australia Fashion week• Representing fashion and apparel business interests in Government policy working groups on the Creative sector• Representing NZTE as an expert on Australian GST implications for NZ exporters.Highlights:• Supporting the inaugural NZ Fashion Week, with a visitor programme for buyers and media• Working alongside iconic NZ companies – Icebreaker, Swazi, Canterbury, Pumpkin Patch and Bendon, to support their international growth.

Criterion was a manufacturer of flat pack furniture, exporting mainly to Australia and USA. It has since closed down its operations. At its peak we were shipping 10 containers per week.Responsibilities included:• Negotiations with freight companies• Engagement with factory planners and logistics teams• Shipping documentation• Stock management• Review, negotiation and management of Letters of Credit• Follow up and trouble shooting of deliveriesHighlights:• Generating cost savings for Criterion by leading a collective freight negotiation with 4 other furniture companies – driving down our freight rates to the lowest levels in 10 years.• Finding new ways of shipping laminated fibreboard to the factory in Australia using flat racks.
