Most recently, 3 years of support running the Barking & Dagenham Business Awards. A Steering Group member participating in decisions on the format of the awards. Responsible for communications with previous and current year participants during the application process; managing entries for viewing by the judges, managing arrival of the guests on awards celebration night, support to Debra Bean with general management of the competition culminating in the awards celebration event.Since 2005, support on around 10 projects similar to the Barking & Dagenham Business Award, in various capacities - sometimes with pre-event administration, other times with event support.Debra and I work so well together that we are actively seeking new projects jointly.

Initially, remote support to the two directors of the small management consultancy, support with running IT systems, formatting documents, clients liaison when directors were on assignment and out of phone/email contact. Liaison with associates, preparation of CVs, formatting tenders, final reports etc. including graphs, images, solve complex formatting problems.Set up first IT systems to enable information sharing among directors and associates. Supported through period of growth for six years, for final years attended business premises one day each week as well as remote support. Eventually handed over to a full time employee and I remain available for project work. The company has continued to grow impressively.

The Gambia

After graduating with a degree in Environmental Quality and Resource Management (with Spanish) and my work with Trips Worldwide, focussed on ecotourism in Belize - I applied to VSO for a post working in Belize with the Toledo Ecotourism Association (TEA) - in the place where Green & Blacks, Maya Gold chocolate comes from, a Spanish speaking village. I was accepted by VSO but the TEA job wasn't happening and I was put forward for a job in The Gambia. I am not complaining at all, it turned out wonderfully. But instead of going to a place where I'd been sending visitors, where I could make my Spanish language learning stick - I went to West Africa and learned to speak some Wolof.The job was as Ecotourism Advisor at The National Environment Agency (NEA) in The Gambia. My task was to help develop an ecotourism strategy, to increase the benefit of tourism in The Gambia for nature conservation and the local communities. Tourism in The Gambia has been very successful as a winter sun destination but it's one of the places where resources get used for the tourism industry to the detriment of local communities, with most of the profits leaving the country due to foreign tourism business ownership and higher level positions in the workforce being taken by foreigners too. I believe it's improved in many ways these days.My job was to work with my Gambian colleagues to identify the ecotourism opportunities, tourism problems and possible solutions in a strategy document for the guidance of The National Environment Agency.While living in The Gambia for 2.5 years, I did a second round of Rough Guide updating: The Gambia, Senegal and Guinea Bissau chapters of The Rough Guide to West Africa.

First employee of this new, growing travel business, specialising in ecotourism and adventure holidays.I spent my days making the arrangements for tailor-made holidays in Central America, bringing together the logistics for the choices made by each traveller.Trips was an early supporter of the Programme for Belize (www.pfbelize.org). The Rio Bravo Conservation and Management area being a regular destination for the clients.Many clients visited Costa Rica, staying in locally owned accommodation, including visits to volcanos and beaches, the first rainforest cable car to learn about life in the canopy and turtle conservation projects.I was lucky enough to visit Costa Rica during my time working for Trips, and included some research for my degree dissertation - Ecotourism in Costa Rica - Does it work? My conclusion in short I think was - it's worth it but there are challenges.Mexico was also a destination for many clients. I was able to visit during 1994. Part holiday and to experience the places visited by Trips clients, but mostly to update the Yucatán Peninsula chapter of The Rough Guide to Mexico.
