Ensured the continued scientific health and development of the drugs department, whilst accommodating tight delivery times and shrinking casework budgets.• Planned and supervised a number of drugs related scientific research projects each year to ensure that the department was equipped to deal with the changing drugs market.• Provided a broad range of forensic knowledge and skill to advise investigators in especially complex or unusual police investigations.• Directed the laboratory work and reported on findings for personal casework (revenue in excess of £120K p.a.) and peer reviewed complex cases of other staff. • Estimated for and reported defence and private work as required.• Provided scientific advice on drugs to all staff and trained and mentored staff, as appropriate, to enhance their knowledge of drugs examination/reporting.• Worked with customers to improve their drugs submissions and improve LGC’s service including delivering appropriate training, advice on force protocols, information booklets/handouts, checklists, sampling protocols etc.• Provided scientific advice on drugs to government agencies, including CPS, ACPO, Home Office, HOSDB, NPIA and Ministry of justice and acted as a conduit between these bodies and LGC Forensics drugs department.

• Planned and set up a fully operational forensic drugs laboratory from scratch, within 4 months, including purchase of equipment, development of all instrumental methods and setting up QA system to UKAS standards.• Managed the provision of a fast, effective, comprehensive, high quality and easily accessible service for the forensic examination of all drugs related police submissions.• Resource management of drugs department to ensure adequate case-working resources, including staff (numbers, overtime, leave, consultants etc), case allocation, equipment time, consumables. Leading to timely delivery of services.• Planned and budgeted for capital equipment, space, staff to ensure continued timely delivery of routine services and negotiated contracts for special services such as ‘music festival’ weekends and special police operations.• Responsible for all drugs staff appraisals• Examined and reported on all Drugs related Crime Scenes for Forensic Alliance• Reported and peer reviewed a significant proportion of the drugs team casework with a personal annual case revenue in excess of £150K• Provided advice, support, training and expert opinion to the Criminal Justice System on all drugs related matters.
