Making use of 25yrs experience in engagement, participatory development, co-design, co-governance, and participatory / qualitative research. Working within the context of place-making / spatial change / urban design and planning/ / architecture / landscape architecture and planning. My time is split between research and advice - and delivery of design/infrastructure/planning projects. Research and advice: My aim is to provide evidence based reports and advice on the relationship between local people and their place - and how 'how' we design impacts 'what' is designed. I pay particular attention to equity and how that informs vibrant, sustainable places.Place-change:At the heart of my approach is a deep respect for the local relationship to place. I often arrive before a design team and leave after them - stewarding and supporting how local people relate to professional processes and public institutions. I also provide training, advice/mentoring and research notes for local authorities, national government and design/ construction sector. Recent clients include Waka Kotahi, The Helen Clark Foundation, and a number of local councils and design/construction firms.

Author of the report, "Safer Cities by Design".Safer Cities By Design is our latest discussion paper in partnership with WSP in New Zealand. The paper recommends bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise in establishing safe urban places. It also calls for urban public places to be designed in a way that restores mana and mauri Māori.While a review of crime data paints a complex picture, there are challenges to respond to with rising concern about public safety in our cities. Coordinated urban design interventions can help make us feel safer. These will become critically important as our cities become denser and there is more demand for public space.The paper finds that fears about potential crime can affect where people choose to live, and whether and how they use public places. Some groups, especially women, trans and nonbinary people, children, and older people, suffer disproportionately and will often modify and limit their use of urban streets, squares, parks, playgrounds, and public buildings because of safety concerns.The paper sets out how recent thinking on Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) can contribute to safer cities. It discusses the conditions necessary for this to succeed, so that urban public space is open to all who want and need to use it.

As a Founding Director I was responsibile forgovernance, strategy development, stakeholder management, business/funding and programme development. A highlight was: 1 Conversation, 100 Communities. This programme enabled Te Pūtahi and the people of Christchurch to co-design this new organisation and opened an opportunity for 100 groups to reflect, together, on Christchurch's sense of place 4yrs after the earthquakes.

Successfully revitalized The Art House through deep engagement with it’s communities of practice and interest. This included the development of a new building and revamping all aspects of the artistic programme/ business model and undertaking staff /board development. Directed a capital programme within a contested heritage building- including all aspects of clientship, with the support of our team e.g. design development, procurement, HR/change management, business modeling, managing stakeholders including pan-disability group, artist commissions and fundraising ($8 million in difficult economic context). Working closely with Sheffield University's Architecture Dept - live projects' programme.Secured ‘National Portfolio Programme’ (revenue funding) status from Arts Council England. Secured funding uplift of 100% from city council for artist development programmes. This was during a time of major city change in Wakefield and funding change in the UK.Developed a service providing national consultancy on equality & quality in the arts for key national arts organizations e.g. AXIS (national visual arts network), Arts Council England and Hepworth Gallery. Part of regional leadership group on equality following on from leadership award from Cultural Leadership Programme.

International Network

Founding member of an international network to develop young people's involvement in the design process. Convening annual live projects in e.g. Finland, Poland. Network includes design professionals, academics and pedagogues.
