About Annemarie F Laudanski

Annemarie is a biomechanical researcher interested in the integration of machine learning and wearable technologies in the aims of furthering our ability to study human movement beyond traditional laboratory settings. I am primarily interested in the study of pathological motion and the creation of tools which might serve in multi-disciplinary research teams, ultimately to aid in prevention and rehabilitation efforts. I obtained my PhD in Biomechanics at the University of Waterloo in the Biomechanics of Human Mobility (BOHM) Laboratory. My research involved the use of computational methods for the classification and measurement of community based human motion based on wearable data, with a particular interest in occupational postures associated with the development of knee osteoarthritis. I completed my Master's of Applied Science degree at Queen's University jointly between the Bio-Mechatronics and Robotics Laboratory (BMRL) and the Motor Performance Laboratory (MPL) working on a study funded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (HSFO) studying stair ascent and descent in rehabilitated stroke survivor through inertial-based measurement tools.

  • University Of Waterloo
Doctor Of Philosophy - Phd, Biomechanics, Kinesiology
University Of Waterloo Sep 2016 - Dec 2022
Thesis Title: "Development of a Wearable Sensor-Based Framework for the Classification and Quantification of High Knee Flexion Exposures in Childcare".Research for this thesis included the identification of postures adopted in occupational settings which may result in an increased risk of knee osteoarthritis development and subsequent simulation of these postures in a laboratory setting. Participants were recruited to perform a series of postures and tasks under controlled and uncontrolled conditions while wearable sensor based data (inertial and EMG) were collected from their lower extremities. Computational modeling of the lower limb kinematics and subsequent machine learning approaches were adapted for the ultimate identification and analysis of these high risk postures in occupational settings.
  • University Of Guelph
    Sessional Instructor
University Of Guelph Jan 2021 - Apr 2021
I was responsible for the development and delivery of ENGG 4400: Biomechanical Engineering Design course content to 400 level undergraduate students in the School of Engineering . This course introduced students to biomechanical factors influencing design, regulatory issues, current development trends, and possible future directions of design and technology. Student groups were additionally supported in the ideation, concept development, design, and modeling, as well as the conceptualized manufacturing and testing of biomechanical devices for an industry based client. My responsibilities as instructor included development of the course outline, lecture content, and assessments along with their respective rubrics. Additionally, I supervised student groups, coordinated meetings with industry partners and guest lecturers and created the final examination.
