Organic Valley is a model of how good food can be done. A billion-dollar cooperative owned by family farms, OV is not only wholly committed to organics, but also to keeping families on their farms. As the Director of Public Affairs, I oversaw two teams who focused on educational and mission-based events around the country, communications and speaking training for the cooperative leadership, corporate (but in our case, cooperative) communications, including rapid response, and the giving program for the organization.

We are a non-profit, full-service certifier working with clients from every part of the food system chain: from seed to field to production to packaging to shelf. MOSA specializes in dairies and livestock: there’s a reason we certify more of these operations than anyone else.

I co-founded, managed, edited, and published the Kickapoo Free Press. The paper was a 5000-circulation monthly news and entertainment newspaper and online service focusing on the region around Viroqua, in southwestern Wisconsin.We wrote well, we told good stories,we made a difference in our community. And we had a blast.

As a staff writer at this major metro daily newspaper, I was responsible for reporting and writing relevant, accurate, and timely news articles. I started writing obituaries, moved to the crime beat, and then covered Minneapolis Public Schools. Along the way, I covered everything from the lawsuit around silicone breast implants, the major case of serial killer Andrew Cunanan, and following President Bill Clinton around as part of the reporter pool during his visit to Minneapolis. This job launched my career as a writer and was a terrific way to establish my foundation as an ethical, analytical, and big-picture thinker.
