About Annette Anderson

I am a highly motivated entomologist with over 15 years experience, nationally and internationally, in biodiversity and ecology research. Parasitoid hymenoptera have been my primary area of research and passion since 2002. During a recent career break to spend time with my family, I became actively involved in Melbourne Water’s Waterwatch Waterbug Census program. I am passionate about sharing the skills gained through the Waterbug Census and started Environmental Education for Kids (EEK!) to engage school children with their local waterways, the macroinvertebrates within them, issues they face and ways we can all help. I am also an educator with the Platypus Education Group (PEG) engaging children with the iconic platypus, human impacts and ways they can help. I enjoy engaging with community groups at a variety of festivals. I have a strong passion for a sustainable future and a belief that we need to educate and engage the community to achieve this.

    Yarra Ranges Shire
PEG was awarded Yarra Ranges Council Community Grants in 2016 and 2017 and a Knox City Council community grant in 2017. We teach primary school children about platypus and the dangers they face. During these sessions we run an interactive question and answer question with students and highlight issues platypus face with hands-on games. At the end of the session we give the students the elastic band challenge. We tell the children the problems of elastic bands/ plastic rings entering waterways through stormwater and the threat they pose to platypus. Each school is challenged to collect as many bands as they can in one month. Students love the challenge and immediately start collecting bands. In 2016, we visited 12 schools and the students collected over 17,000 bands!
