I am a principal researcher for the "Truth and Integrity In State Budgeting" project through the Volcker Alliance, a national organization dedicated to working for effective government. The goal of the project is to assess budgeting policies in all 50 states for effectiveness, efficiency, and transparency. There are 30 questions composing the following categories: Budget Forcasting, Budget Maneuvers, Legacy Costs, Reserve Funds, and Transparency. I work to answer these questions for all assigned states by studying their public budgets and reaching out to state budget directors where necessary. I am also a researcher for the 2018 Annual Economic Report to the Governor, which has served as the preeminent data source on the Utah economy for over two decades. The 2018 report will be the 30th publication in its series. Additionally, I work as an internal reviewer for other projects out of the institute especially as they relate to healthcare, health policy, workforce projections, immigration policy, or military/veterans affairs because of my previous work and research experience in all of those areas. I also work to assist with analysis of city government data collected annually by the institute and develop reports in the following categories to help inform city government level decision making: Finance, Fire/Police, Fiscal Stress, Parks and Recreation, Roads, Water and Demographics, and Community Development.
Global Public Health Fellow
Working with the Prevention Research and Translation Branch within the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, I support the mission to work to save babies by studying and addressing the causes of birth defects. My work focuses on 2 main projects--supporting fortification of maize flour in Tanzania and conducting a systematic review on food fortification in Belize. I work for part of my time at the CDC campus in Atlanta Georgia, and the other half of my time in the field in Dar es Salaam Tanzania, offering programatic support and troubleshooting to on the ground contractors in the work of maize fortification. Building on the 2015 Global Summit on Food Fortification and the "Arusha Statement" regarding global food fortification strategies, we prepared for a follow-up meeting in August 2017 to discuss specifics of Tanzania's strategic approach. Secondly, in an effort of synthesize the existing data on fortification in central america and Belize in particular, I conducted a detailed literature review and worked with Dr. Jorge Rosenthal (Epidemiologist) to update the literature and give public health professionals an update on the status of food fortification outcomes in Belize, stratified by region and compared overall to the U.S. and Guatemala. As a population-level data analytics professional, I apply my knowledge and expertise to fast-paced public health work that directly impacts global health food fortification policy.
