I build worlds and stories across platforms. I am an award winning director and dramaturg with over 20 years of experience. I work with individual writers, interdisciplinary creative teams and cultural organisations to make new kinds of stories and build worlds on stage, in immersive environments, and across platforms. I design and curate innovation projects with cultural organisations, make new work from the ground up with creative teams or come in as a mentor, dramaturg or script doctor on interesting projects. I have a particular interest projects that reimagine how we live together and build better worlds. Fiction around social change, climate futures, system-change, equitable transitions - from science fiction to climate horror. As long as the story and experince are exciting.I started in immersive theatre in London over 20 years ago. I cut my teeth as a co-artistic director of Coney - an award-winning interactive theatre company. I made shows for and with the National Theatre of Wales, National Theatre Studio, Battersea Arts Centre, European Space Agency, Kensington Palace, Tate Britain, Science Museum but also in night clubs and public spaces. I spend a year at WIRED & The Space as a Creative Fellow looking at multi-platform storytelling, XR and theatre. I ran the artistic innovation department Audience Labs at the Royal Opera House - working with collaborators like The National Gallery & National Ballet of Canada, artists like Wayne McGregor & Netia Jones, and technology partners incl Magic Leap, The Imaginarium, Google Creative Labs & Figment Productions. Our Hyper Reality Opera - Current Rising won best Out-of-Home experience at the prestigious International AIXR XR Awards.Current projects include: Impossible Theatres - a publication imagining 20 Impossible Theatres - cultural buildings based on the imagination of 40+ artists, architects, engineers and AI.7th Assessment - a collaboration with David Finnigan working on a theatre series that explore the 7th IPCC, how we are going to be human in the climate era, and there will be an epic rave too. Artistic Director Audience LabsAudience Labs Oct 2021 - PresentLondon Area, United KingdomAn artist-led lab making interdisciplinary theatre, art and publications that imagine sustainable, just and creative visions of the future. We live in a world that needs a lot of imagination. This is a complex time of slow crisis. To create better futures, you first have to imagine alternatives to the now and the expected.Bringing people together across disciplines to think through complex ideas is a generative process. Creative processes are different from the scientific method, but both have their own forms of rigour. Our artistic work is deeply rooted in research, coalitions and collaborations. Always aimed at discovering what could be.Art and culture is a space which experiments with alternative modes of living, making and working. Audience Labs aims to make imaginative work that can inspire new realities.

The Space / Wired Creative FellowThe Space / Wired Jul 2015 - Jul 2016Annette Mees was awarded on of the inaugural The Space/WIRED Creative Fellowship. During her fellowship she explored future forecasting, speculative fiction and the interaction between fiction and the arts. The future is the ultimate public space, something we all have a stake in and seek to be part of. But it is also a fictional place – it doesn’t yet exist. Annette specialises in how art and artists can collaborate with scientists and specialists in creating diverse versions of possible futures. Among other things she worked on Future Assembly; a UK-wide project brings together teens and over-65s, to explore the Future they would like to exist 50 years from now. Collectively over 100 collaborators creates a Manifesto for the the Future.Future Assemblies brought creative processes and a fiercely optimistic attitude to future foresighting.
