About Annick Dewald

I studied engineering at Smith College, drawn by its engineering program in a small liberal arts setting. Throughout college, I participated in research, gaining hands-on experience in designing, manufacturing, and testing—the core pillars of the engineering design process. This exposure enabled me to see myself as an engineer and apply classroom concepts to real-world problems.Upon graduation, I spent a year working at Boeing Research & Technology as an Aerodynamics Engineer before pursuing a PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT. At MIT, my research centered on solar-electric aircraft design and optimization to enable a novel class of Earth observation platforms. This work at the intersection of aircraft systems engineering and remote sensing for climate monitoring affords me a unique perspective on sustainability informed by my training as a systems engineer. Also while at MIT, I expanded my teaching and mentorship skills. I served as a teaching assistant across undergraduate courses, from core curriculum to capstone design, and received formal training through MIT’s Teaching and Learning Laboratory (TLL). As a Teaching Development Fellow, I created workshops for graduate student mentors, demonstrating how to foster metacognitive skills in their mentees to support deeper learning.A pivotal experience during my graduate studies was working with Electra.aero, an aerospace startup developing electric and hybrid-electric aircraft. There, I led a team of 14 undergraduates in manufacturing and flight-testing a demonstrator vehicle for a Stratospheric Airborne Climate Observatory System. This experience highlighted the value of work experience for students, providing authentic opportunities to explore technical engineering skills learned in the classroom while building professional skills through an engaging and hands-on project. My time at Electra also illuminated the unique opportunities within startups, ultimately inspiring me to pursue my current role at Greenway.Now, as a founding faculty member at Greenway, I am part of a team redefining engineering education with a focus on sustainability. This role allows me to combine my passion for teaching, mentoring, and systems thinking to equip students with the skills needed to tackle global challenges. I am excited to inspire the next generation of engineers to approach engineering decisions holistically, considering the traditional technical implications alongside the equally significant economic, social, and environmental implications.

    As a founding faculty member at Greenway, I am part of a team committed to redesigning how engineering is taught to equip students with the skills to tackle diverse design challenges. Leveraging cutting-edge teaching pedagogy, we are reshaping the 4-year engineering program, with a focus on sustainability, systems thinking, and professional development. Many engineering students I have engaged with are drawn to the profession by the impending climate crisis. These bright, solution-oriented future engineers are poised to address the greatest challenge of our generation, but existing programs treat sustainability as an afterthought. At Greenway, we are starting from a blank-slate, embedding sustainability—environmental, social, and economic—into the core of our program, ensuring a holistic approach to addressing engineering problems.A central question guiding our curriculum development is, "What does it mean to think like an engineer?" For me, it is about adopting a systems-thinking mindset—understanding complex problems through the interconnections between subsystems, situated within a broader context, and across the lifecycle of the proposed solution. This mindset aligns seamlessly with the sustainability perspectives we are integrating into our curriculum. As a systems engineer by training, I find this approach essential to addressing the complexity of modern engineering challenges.While many programs emphasize design and professional skills through capstone courses and projects, we are going further by embedding workplace experience into the curriculum. Students will tackle real-world problems in co-op placements, where the social and environmental implications of their engineering decisions will be explored in real-world settings. The Greenway model supports students through this experiential learning via instruction and mentorship throughout, and will graduate the next generation of leaders in the field.

    I completed my graduate studies at MIT working in the International Center for Air Transportation. My dissertation was titled "An Integrated Vehicle, Payload, and Trajectory Optimization Framework for Highly-Coupled Aircraft Systems." Some key contributions of this work include:✈ Developing an objective space exploration approach for design problems with ambiguity in trade-offs between multiple objectives via a pseudo-objective function method to find a set of valuable system designs.✈ Proposing how one could leverage this set of design solutions to quantify performance trade-offs and elicit previously unknown stakeholder preferences.✈ Applying this methodology to a real-world highly-coupled aircraft system designed to reduce uncertainty in predictions of sea-level rise by understanding ice mechanics that drive ice shelf collapse and destabilize previously grounded glaciers in Antarctica.
